MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University volleyball had to overcome more than just a scrappy Mayville State team Tuesday.
The Beavers, coming of a five-set loss to South Dakota Mines Monday and playing their fourth match in five days, looked a little sluggish early.
But once the Beavers got going, they were tough to beat.
MSU rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win the final three sets, topping Mayville State 3-1 in nonconference NCAA Division II women's volleyball at the MSU Dome.
It looked like it might be another tough night as MSU couldn't quite get the big kill or clean up a crutial error down the stretch in set 1, losing by the narrow margin. MSU had seven of its 21 attack errors in the set.
But the Beavers (10-12 overall) rebounded in a big way in the second set and took some much needed momentum into the break. The Beavers pounded 16 kills to just three errors in the second set.
From there on out, Minot State controlled much of the play to get to double digit wins on the season.
Mayville State (22-15) went from hitting a stellar .400 in the first set to an overall .232. Set 2 was the downfall for the Comets as they nearly had as many errors (8) as kills (10). Mayville never registered more than 13 kills in a set after smacking 18 in the first.
The Beavers were also stellar on the defensive end of the match as they finished with 16 block assists, paced by four each from
Sara Friesen (So., MH, Brandon, Manitoba) and
Krista Wickenhauser (Jr., MH, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan).
Mayville was led on offense by Brittany Olson's 13 kills. Josette Glatt added nine for the Comets. Ariana Odegard and Laura Kolness split time at setter with Odegard finishing with 24 assists, while Kolness added 17. Emily Liljestrand paced the team's defense with 17 digs.
The Beavers had five players in double figures in kills, led by a match-high 26 by
Jen Dixon (So., OH, Brandon, Manitoba). Dixon also had a team-leading five aces to go with 13 digs.
Janice Reinbolt (Sr., MH, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) had 13 kills while
Kelsey Wingo (Jr., MH, Twain Harte, Calif.),
Jaylene Koski (Fr., OH, Humbolt, Saskatchewan) and Friesen all finished with 10.
Minot State again split time at setter and both were effective as
Emily Byrne (Fr., S, Reno, Nev.) had 34 and
Jenna Moffatt (So., L, Brandon, Manitoba) finished with 31. Redshirt freshman libero
Brittney Thingstad (Velva, N.D.) was the team leader in digs with 15.
The Beavers have little rest this week as they head to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a tournament Friday and Saturday.
