Minot State splits pair at Triangular

MSU can't quite get above .500

(BOX SCORE vs JAMESTOWN COLLEGE)
(BOX SCORE vs UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS)
(BOX SCORE JC vs USF)

MINOT, N.D. – No matter how hard Minot State University volleyball tries, it seems like the Beavers just can't get over the hump.

MSU avenged a loss to Jamestown College Friday with a 3-1 win in the first game of a triangular at the MSU Dome, but struggled to get momentum in a 3-0 loss to the University of Sioux Falls in NCAA Division II women's volleyball.

The split leaves MSU at 7-8 overall as the Beavers weren't able to rise above .500 in their past two attempts.

The Beavers defeated JC 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 after losing in five in Jamestown on Friday. The Jimmies dispatched the University of Sioux Falls in the second match 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-11) before the Cougars tripped up the Beavers 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 27-25) in the nightcap. All three teams picked up one win on the day.

MSU looked solid in the opener against the former DAC rival Jimmies as MSU dropped just 36 point over the final two sets. MSU had big kill nights from Jen Dixon (So., OH, Brandon, Manitoba), Kelsey Wingo (Jr., MH, Twain Harte, Calif.) and Jaylene Koski (Fr., OH, Humbolt, Saskatchewan). The trio finished with 49 kills overall as Dixon had a match high 27 on 64 attempts.

MSU's only poor set – the second – saw the Beavers rally late and if it weren't for 10 attack errors in the set, all three matches could have ended with sweeps.

JC tried to hold off MSU with 10 kills each from Katie Zent and Emilee Schutta, but in the end a .168 hitting percentage did in the Jimmies.

MSU also got a solid match from setter Emily Byrne (Fr., S, Reno, Nev.) who finished with 53 assists and 14 digs. Jenna Moffatt (So., L, Brandon, Manitoba) also had 14 digs for the Beavers.

In the second match, Zent and Schutta helped the Jimmies breeze to the sweep. The pair finished with nine kills each and Zent added nine digs. Jada Meiklejohn and Kelsey Deragisch split time setting, ending with 18 assists each.

The Cougars couldn't get much going, hitting just .047, but did get nine kills and eight digs from Chanda Goedken.

Goedken was a thorn in MSU's side in the final match as she finished with 13 kills and 13 digs. Charlee Nelson had a team-high 33 assists, while Tashalya Person paced the defense with 18 digs.

Dixon had 12 kills and 10 digs for MSU and Byrne added 34 assists and 10 digs.

The Beavers are off until next week when they travel to NCAA Division I University of North Dakota on Monday starting at 7 p.m.
