Folven passes 1,000; Beavers blast Comets

Minot State's Caroline Folven hits 1,000 career points in blowout win

Minot State's Caroline Folven scores on the inside during the Beavers Alumni Game. Folven scored 17 points Friday and surpassed 1,000 career points in the process.
MAYVILLE, N.D. – Minot State University quelled any upset thoughts by Mayville State with a dominating performance over the final 16 minutes of the first half.
The Beavers used a commanding 33-8 run to erase the last Mayville lead (12-11) and earn an impressive 111-74 win in Dakota Athletic Conference women's basketball Friday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
“It was a great team effort,” said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “We have really struggled with injuries and haven't had several players in practice most of the week. I think that actually helped us.”
Minot's first half numbers were staggering. The Beavers shot 60.5 in the half, making 23 field goals. The Beavers held a 27-4 lead in bench scoring, turned the Comets over 14 times to just four miscues of their own, held a 15-4 advantage in points off turnovers and finished with a 19-8 rebounding edge, gathering as many offensive boards as MaSU had total rebounds (8).
“We shot the ball well and looked fresh in the first half,” Green Gerding said.
The run was started by a 3-pointer by senior Caroline Folven (C, Byron, Ill.) to give the Beavers a 14-12 lead with 16:10 to play in the first half. The basket gave Folven exactly 1,000 career points, becoming the 10th Beavers women's basketball player to reach the plateau and the second in as many years. MacKenzie Mack surpassed 1,000 points last season.
“Caroline looked like she was back in top form again tonight,” said Green Gerding of Folven, who finished with 17 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Minot (6-4 DAC, 15-6 overall) finished with a 60-6 edge in bench scoring due to two factors. First, MSU freshman Christina Boag (F, Tamworth, Australia) went 14 for 14 from the floor to score a career-high 33 points off the bench. The second factor was a beleaguered Mayville State team played just seven players.
“Chris had a career night,” Green Gerding said. “But it was just a good, solid overall effort.”
The Comets (2-7, 4-14) tried to hang in the game with 3-point shooting, knocking down 11 of 17 from beyond the arc. Leading the way was Hailey Longtin who drilled 7 of 9 3s on her way to 21 points. Laura Taylor, the reigning NAIA Division II Player of the Week, had 19 points and five rebounds.
Minot finished with a 36-17 rebounding edge, led by Boag who pulled down nine. Sacarra Molina (So., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) had another solid game with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists. Kallie Erickson (Sr., G, Fordville, N.D.) and Kelly Pankratz (Sr., G, Malta, Mont.) each scored nine while Michaela Larson (R-Fr., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) and Lauren Safranski (So., G, Burnsville, Minn.) chipped in with seven points apiece.
The 111 points put up by the Beavers was the most scored by Minot against a DAC opponent and the second highest overall total in school history. Minot State hit for 131 against Minnesota Crookston in 1999-2000, which was a national record at the time.
The Beavers will play one final DAC regular season road contest in school history as they travel to Madison, S.D., for a 4 p.m. game with Dakota State.
