Beavers hammer Blue Hawks

Minot State sweeps former DAC rival

BOX SCORE

DICKINSON, N.D. – Minot State University volleyball has had its fare share of struggles with rival Dickinson State.

The Blue Hawks were one of the top teams in the NAIA over the past 10 years.

Now, however, with MSU moving on to NCAA Division II, it appears the trend is changing.
The Beavers wasted little time with the Blue Hawks Saturday in what could be the final match in the series, sweeping DSU 3-0 at Scott Gymnasium.

“We are gaining confidence and the girls are buying into the system. It's fun to watch,” said MSU head coach Travis Ward. “We have played a couple good matches in a row. Dickinson is down a little this year, but it feels good when in maybe the last time we play them here and you go out and hammer them.”

The Beavers (4-6 overall) will complete the transition to NCAA Division II next year and begin play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference – a 16-team conference that will virtually fill the Beavers schedule, putting the series with Dickinson in jeopardy.

Minot State only gave up 48 points total in the match sweeping 25-17, 25-17, 25-14. MSU was paced by Jen Dixon (So., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) and Jaylene Koski (Fr., OH, Humbolt, Saskatchewan) who finished with 14 and 13 kills respectively.

“After not playing much early on, Jaylene has really grown up before our eyes,” Ward said. “She has shown she belongs in the mix.”

Pacing the Beavers defense was Jenna Moffatt (So., L, Brandon, Manitoba) who had 17 digs, while Emily Byrne (Fr., S, Reno, Nev.) added 35 assists.

“Emily continues to impress,” Ward said. “She has done a great job in her decision making process and has a calming effect on the team.”

The Beavers will return home for a single match next week during Homecoming 2011, taking on Valley City State Friday at 7 p.m. at the MSU Dome.
