MISU loses three; shows improvement at NWCA Duals

The Beavers are now 1-9 on the season

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- Minot State wrestling lost three more matches Saturday in Springfield, Ill. at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals. There was, however, a winning effort being put forth by those on the mat.

MISU lost to No. 3 University of Central Oklahoma 44-0, Limestone College 28-17 and No. 13 Augustana College 39-15.

“Even though we lost today, I thought we showed a great deal of improvement over last week,” said Beavers head coach Robin Ersland. “I thought we battled hard, we wrestled tough and gave a much better effort. I felt much better about today than I have so far this year. In fact, in a lot of ways, I felt like today was one of our best performances of the season.”

Matt Fetterley (Jr., 174, Muskegon, Mich.) had a solid weekend, tallying two wins in his last two matches. Sophomore Bobby Bartz (285, Harvey, N.D.) also picked up two wins on Saturday, one coming by forfeit and the other by fall.

Making his return to the mat, Cody George (Sr., 184, Clancy, Mont.) made the most of his one appearance on the weekend. He beat his opponent from Limestone College by a 10-8 decision.

The Beavers (1-9 overall 0-2 NSIC) know they have been going against great competition and the hope is that their performance will be heightened due to that high level of battle. Ersland knows it can be frustrating to lose, but thinks the team is getting better.

“I tell them it's about effort more than results because total effort will eventually lead to better results, said Ersland. “We're improving and that's a positive.”

Minot State will get back into NSIC competition on January 19 as they travel south to Mankato, Minn. to take on the No. 19 Minnesota State University Mavericks. Dual time is set for 7 P.M.
