Box Score WAYNE, Neb. – Minot State University women's team probably felt a little bit of déjà vu Friday night.
For the second straight game, Minot State battled back from an early deficit.
For the second straight game, the Beavers couldn't get over the hump and take a lead.
No. 22 ranked Wayne State College led from start to finish and held off MISU multiple times in a 51-44 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at Rice Auditorium.
“It was a little different tonight in the sense that we got the ball were we wanted to get it,” said MISU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. “Our guards were patient against the zone but we struggled to get shots to fall early and it was tough to get any penetration against their zone.”
The loss spoiled a huge night for junior
Carly Boag (F, Tamworth, Australia), who finished with a career-high 22 rebounds to go along with a team-high 15 points. The 22 rebounds are the most by any women's basketball player in the Northern Sun this season and gives Boag two top NSIC performances in a week as her 37 points against Upper Iowa last Friday leads the NSIC.
“Carly was a monster on the boards,” Green Gerding said. “Basically every rebound that came down she got. We did a good job rebounding holding a team who is pretty big to just four offensive rebounds.”
Boag, who is ranked in the top 10 in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage, struggled a bit in the game, hitting 6 of 16 from the floor. The Beavers (8-7 overall, 4-7 NSIC) in general had a tough shooting night as the Beavers were just 16 for 53 in the game.
The Wildcats (11-4, 7-4) weren't much better from the field, hitting 16 of 42 from the field, but knocked down eight 3-pointers. WSC outscored Minot State 24-3 from beyond the arc.
“(Wayne State) hit some shots we didn't' expect them to hit,” Green Gerding said. “They are not a great outside shooting team and I'm not sure they will hit those every night, but they hit them and we didn't. We had a good game plan and defended pretty well overall.”
The Beavers cut the WSC lead from nine to two points at halftime and narrowed it to just one with free throws by
Francesca DeAngelis (Sr., G, Laguna Niguel, Calif.) early in the second half. But Wayne State pushed it back to a five point lead on a three-point play and a hoop by Whitney Epp and the lead hovered between three and seven much of the second half.
Ashton Yossi led the way for Wayne State with 13 points and four rebounds. Addy Roller and Ellen Hansen scored 12 apiece and combined for six 3-pointers. Hansen hit 4 of 5 on 3s and pulled down nine rebounds in the win.
Boag was the lone Beaver player to reach double figures. DeAngelis scored eight points and
Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) finished with six points, five rebounds and four steals.
The road trip doesn't get any easier as the Beavers will look to snap a two-game losing streak at No. 13 Augustana College Saturday at 4 p.m.
