Rebounds derail Minot State

Minnesota Duluth pulls down 23 rebounds in win over Minot State

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Minot State University had three glaring statistics in its loss Friday at Minnesota Duluth.

The Beavers committed 27 turnovers, shot just 35 percent from the field and – in what has become an alarming trend – were outrebounded 43-29.

In the end, the combination of the three derailed the Beavers, snapped MISU's two-game winning streak and sent Minot State to its third straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss as the Bulldogs defeated Minot State 62-49 in NSIC women's basketball Friday at Romano Gymnasium.

The Beavers (6-4 overall, 2-4 NSIC) trailed by just six at halftime despite hitting only five field goals in the half. Minot State kept in the game by hitting 10 of 11 free throws.

“It's frustrating,” said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. “We wanted to come out and get some things going and get up and down a little and instead we pretty much just stood around and watched early on. We did a better job of moving at times in the second half and at times did what we wanted to do defensively, but we gave up too many rebounds and turnover the ball over too many times.”

But early in the second half, the Bulldogs (7-3, 4-2) began to pull away as missed shots and turnovers piled up for MISU. The Beavers committed a season-high 27 turnovers and shot just 15 of 42 from the floor in the loss.

“If you add the 23 offensive rebounds and the 27 turnovers, that's 50 possessions we give up,” Green Gerding said. “We don't match up too well in man-to-man because we are a little smaller so we are forced to go zone. In zone, we don't box out and we don't chase down the ball. That's very frustrating for us right now.”

But it was rebounding that ultimately did the Minot State in, giving up 23 offensive boards to UMD and 43 overall. The rebounding numbers led to UMD taking 20 more field goals than Minot State, even though the Bulldogs shot nearly the same percentage (37.1 percent).

Katrina Newman knocked down four 3-pointers for a game-high 24 points and added six rebounds and four steals in the win. Taylor Meyer pulled down 14 rebounds and added eight points for UMD.

Carly Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) was the only Beaver in double figures, scoring 10 points and adding eight rebounds in the loss. Morgan Klose (So., G, Fairview, N.D.) hit a pair of 3s for the Beavers and scored eight points and Alisha Jones (Jr., G, Killeen, Texas) added seven points.

The Beavers will look to snap the three-game NSIC losing streak with a road game at St. Cloud State Saturday (4 p.m.).
