Late bucket beats Beavers

Minot State falls for second time on first road trip

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Minot State University couldn't put Minnesota Duluth away.

The Beavers held a 66-61 lead after Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) hit a 3-pointer with 2:33 to play. But MISU was outscored 9-2 after as the Bulldogs rallied for a 70-68 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at Romano Gymnasium.

Jessica Newman hit two big baskets – one a 3-pointer with 53 seconds to play and the second the game-winner with 0.7 seconds remaining to lift UMD. Newman scored 13 points in the game.

The Beavers (7-2 overall, 3-2 NSIC) trailed early on as UMD was nearly perfect from beyond the arc, hitting 7 of its first 8 3-pointers – and giving Minot State flashbacks to Friday's 3-point assault from St. Cloud State.
But Minot State battled back, outscoring UMD 34-32 in the second half.

Much of the second-half surge was due to Klose. She hit five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 19 points.

UMD (6-3, 3-2) used near perfect second-half free throw shooting to keep Minot State from pulling away. UMD hit 12 of 14 foul shots and outscored Minot State 14-5 from the line. The Beavers were whistled for 17 fouls compared to just eight for the Bulldogs.

Along with Newman's 13 points, three other UMD players reached double figures. Taylor Meyer scored 14 points, Danielle Flood hit for 11 and Allyson Harris finished with a double-double scoring 10 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 28-17 advantage on the boards.

Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) scored 15 points, Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) finished off a solid weekend with 14 points, seven assists and four rebounds, while Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored 13 points and led the Beavers with seven rebounds.

Minot State finishes off the calendar year with one more short road trip as the Beavers travel to rival University of Mary Friday starting at 6 p.m.
