Minot State pulls away from UMD

Beavers hold off early UMD run, use size and strength to roll

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University had to weather a Minnesota Duluth shooting storm, but once the Beavers did, their size and athleticism took over.

Minot State turned a 21-14 deficit into a 42-33 lead in about seven minutes of play in the first half and raced to an 84-66 win over the Bulldogs in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday in front of 1,386 fans at the Minot State Dome.

"Moving and sharing the ball is key for us," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "You want to see a team that plays together and that they aren't selfish players. Sometimes I think we get ourselves in trouble sometimes because we are too unselfish, but this team plays really well together and they do a nice job finding each other. A good pass leads to a good score and it's fun to coach. It's as simple as great players making great plays."

In the first half it was Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) who was on the receiving end nearly all of the Beavers' 12 first-half assists. She was 8 for 9 from the floor and scored 17 of her game-high 27 points before the break.

"I worked with G-Pa all week (assistant coach Gary Walhaug) and we worked on finishing strong around the hoop," she said. "I just had to focus on doing that and trusting my teammates would find me when I would get open. We played good tonight and it was a lot of fun for us."

Boag went to work on the break after the Beavers began to shut down a hot-shooting Bulldogs' team that opened the game with a torrid 89 percent shooting hitting 8 of their first 9 shots, including a 3-pointer by Katrina Newman that gave UMD a 21-14 lead with 12:46 to play in the first half.

The Beavers (12-3 overall, 8-3 NSIC) led by six at the break and pushed that to double figures on a 3-pointer by Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) just two minutes into the second half. The lead never waned lowered than nine despite foul trouble on Boag. Jones netted seven of her 14, Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) added eight of her 12 in the second half and Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) hit for six of her 12 points in the second as MISU shot 64.3 percent from the floor.

"It's our energy and wanting to win," Jones said. "Our energy picks us up every game and we made sure we had that tonight right away and we did our best to keep that level the entire game."

Jessica Newman led the Bulldogs (9-6, 6-5) with 17 points. Katrina Newman added 15 points, while Hannah Rutten finished with 12 in the loss.

Christina Boag added 11 points and five assists to her 12 points on a solid all-around game. Carly Boag finished with seven rebounds and Hardy added seven more boards. Jones finished with seven assists for Minot State.

The Beavers will look to make it five in a row as they play host to St. Cloud State Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. at the Dome.
