Hot shooting propels No. 14 WSC past Minot State

Beavers go into lull midway through first half, never recover

Box Score MINOT, N.D.  – Minot State University went into a funk about midway through the first half and No. 14 Wayne State College never let the Beavers out of it, pulling away for an 84-57 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate women's basketball game Friday at the Minot State Dome.

"Bottom line is we came out with no energy tonight, we played just like we practiced all week and we did everything to prepare ourselves to get our butts kicked," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "I give them credit, their zone is tough, but our effort tonight was a little less than pathetic."

The teams traded runs until a jumper by Savana Kingsbury (So., F, Omaha, Neb.) tied the contest at 22 with 7:12 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats (13-1 overall, 6-1 NSIC) closed the half on a 20-7 run to lead by 13 at the break.

Minot State (8-3, 4-3) never got it closer than 14 in the second half to lose its first game at the MSU Dome this season.

Wayne State was fueled by its 3-point shooting as the Wildcats knocked down 12 of 22 triples, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort from Millie Niggeling. Niggeling finished with 17 points and helped WSC to 54.9 percent shooting overall in the contest.

The Beavers didn't come close to matching that effort shooting from the floor (32.4 percent) or on 3-pointers (26.3 percent).

Ellen Hansen paced the Wildcats with 19 points and finished with nine rebounds and five assists. Ashton Yossi added 14 points and Jaylan Spencer chipped in with 10.

Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) and Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) both reach double figures for the Beavers as Hardy had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Boag netted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but struggled to a 5 for 17 shooting night. Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) scored nine points for MISU.

The Beavers will look to turn things around Saturday as they entertain another ranked opponent at the Dome as No. 13 Augustana College comes to town for a 4 p.m. start.
