MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University women's soccer team secured an NSIC playoff spot Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Northern State.
"It was a well played game," head coach
Jason Spain said. "We created a lot of chances and the midfield played really well."
The Beavers came out ready to play from the start taking 10 shots before the Wolves were able to get a shot of their own on the stat sheet. But even with the constant pressure in the first half, the Beavers were unable to find the back of the net and they headed to halftime with the score all square at 0-0.
It didn't take long for the sustained pressure in the first half to pay off for the Beavers in the second half, though.
Maritssa Perez (Fr., M, Santa Ana, Calif.) caught the Wolves' keeper off her line as she put a deflected cross into the back of the net.
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was credited with the assist. According to Spain, Perez played her best game of the year tonight.
The Beavers pressure continued throughout the course of the match as they took 12 more shots in the second half.
In the 83rd minute of play, MacFarlane gave Minot State some breathing room when she provided the second goal of the match for the Beavers. MacFarlane struck the ball from just outside the penalty area and the ball was too high for the Wolves' keeper to reach.
Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.) stopped four shots in the match for the Beavers to secure her third shutout of the season.
Kristin Long (Jr., M, Mesa, Ariz.) provided an attacking spark in the contest for the Beavers recording six shots, four of which came in the first 17 minutes of play.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 9-6-2 overall on the season and 8-5-1 in the Northern Sun.
Minot State will end regular season play and honor their three seniors this Sunday at Herb Parker Stadium when they take on Minnesota State-Moohead. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
