Box Score MINOT, N.D. – It was as record-setting night for Minot State University's
Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia).
Boag scored a career-high 39 points, setting a single game record for points, and became the Beavers all-time leading scorer as Minot State held off Southwest Minnesota State 76-66 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at the Minot State Dome.
The night was also big for the Beavers (17-7 overall, 13-7 NSIC) as a team as Minot State clinched a home NSIC playoff game, set for Feb. 26. It will be the first home playoff game for the Beavers since joining the league last season.
"We still have work to do. We still have two games to go and we want to finish well," said MISU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "It was a goal of ours to secure a home playoff game and finish in the top half of the conference and it was nice to accomplish that goal but the work is not done yet."
"Every single team brings it and we have had a lot of close games. It comes down to one play, one free throw or one rebound a lot and the bottom line is we have to bring our best game to the playoffs. That said we are excited that we will be able to play in front of our home fans."
Now back to Boag's night.
She hit 15 of 22 shots from the floor and was 9 for 11 on free throws, pulled down nine rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends for a total of 18, added four steals and an assist. She passed Carol Hays' 37 points set in 1998-99 for single game mark and passed former MISU great Kendra Meyer's record for career points, finishing the night with 1,720 points, 10 more than Meyer's 1,710 amassed from 2004-08.
"I know those records are things she has worked very hard to try and accomplish," Green Gerding said of Boag. "It's a tribute to her and what a great player she is, she is just really special and has helped us win a lot of games and also with our move into the NCAA. To become the career leading scorer after only playing in 26 games in her first two seasons is just special, that's a lot of numbers and a huge accomplishment."
The Beavers continued to get stellar play from their post combination of Boag, sister
Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) and
Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.). The trio combined for 64 of the 76 points and added 26 rebounds, five assists and seven steals. Hardy finished with a solid 15 points and five rebounds, while
Christina Boag chipped in with 10 points and three assists.
"Breaking those records was a great achievement but my goal for tonight was just to win and try to secure a home playoff game,"
Carly Boag said. "Most of all I couldn't have been able to reach those marks without my teammates, and at the end of the day I'm just glad we got the win."
Minot State took a three point lead into the halftime break and maintained a 10 point cushion most of the second half, but never fully shook the pesky Mustangs (4-20, 2-18). SMSU cut the Beavers' lead to one at 12:58 of the second half on a 3-pointer by Jessie Watts, but MISU's
Alisha Jones (Sr., G, Killeen, Texas) countered with a three of her own and sparked a 9-0 run capped by
Carly Boag to push it back to a double figure lead for Minot State.
Two Mustangs reached 20 points and Alison Nagel netted 21 off the bench, while Bree Holleman hit four 3-pointers to score 20. Nagel added eight rebounds for SMSU. Rebekah Rolling added 10 points and four rebounds for the Mustangs.
Jones scored eight points and added eight assists and three rebounds for the Beavers. MISU held a huge 21-5 advantage on offensive rebounds and turned SMSU over 16 times to hold a 72-47 shot advantage.
Minot State will finish the season on the road as they travel to Minnesota State Moorhead and Northern State Friday and Saturday with the top four spots up for grabs.
