MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University women's soccer team completed their sweep of homecoming weekend Sunday afternoon when they defeated the University of Sioux Falls. Four different players scored in the Beavers' 4-0 victory.
"To get six points on the weekend was big," head coach
Jason Spain said. "We'll see how everyone else does. Maybe we can stretch away and climb the ladder a little bit. We can look toward starting to clinch a conference tournament birth."
Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) got the scoring started for the Beavers early on when she scored from the penalty spot in the 12th minute of play.
Gemma Biasetto (Jr., F, Albuquerque, N.M.) drew a foul in the left part of the penalty area to earn the penalty kick.
The Beavers struck once more before the referee's halftime whistle in the 30th minute when
Kristin Long (Jr., M, Mesa, Ariz.) beat a defender in midfield and had a strike from 25 yards out. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper's head and brought the score to 2-0.
The second half of play proved to be much of the same for Minot State as they recorded 17 shots in the half and added two more goals.
Taylor Bachman-Williams (Sr., D, Minot, N.D.) got on the score sheet for the second time this season when she headed in a corner taken by
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
Sydnee Canales (Fr., F, Manteca, Calif.) finished off the scoring in the 86th minute as she slotted the ball low past the keeper off a cross from
Kellie Piazza (So., M, Tracy, Calif.).
Goalkeeper
Celene Johnson (Jr., Rocklin, Calif.) recorded her second clean sheet in just three games as the starting keeper for the Beavers. The Beavers back-four did well to preserve the shutout, but also scored two of the team's goals Sunday afternoon.
"I don't think a lot of people really expect the defense to score too many goals," Rebelo said. "It was a really good day overall for all of us, really.
"We try to keep talking to each other in the back. When things get a little crazy, we try to get everyone to relax and we have really good communication back there."
Jamie Council (Sr., F, Atascadero, Calif.) and
Chloe Melton (So., F, Fleet, England) made strong contributions off the bench for the Beavers taking five shots collectively.
The Beavers improve to 4-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NSIC with the win. Sioux Falls drops to 0-7-1 and 0-5-0 in the conference.
Minot State heads to Winona State Friday, Oct. 3 before finishing their upcoming road trip at Upper Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 5.
