BOX SCOREMINOT, N.D. – After managing to record just seven team points yesterday in its dual against Minnesota State, the Minot State wrestling team finished their weekend road trip on a high note as they defeated Northern State 27-18 in Aberdeen, S.D.
"It was kid of an ugly win, but as my high school coach--my father--has said many times 'a win is a win is a win,'" head wrestling coach
Robin Ersland said. "They were more 'up' for the match for some reason than we were."
The Beavers got off to a quick 3-0 start courtesy of
Cody Haugen's (Fr., 149, Minot, N.D.) 3-2 decision over Grant Steen. Haugen went 2-0 on the weekend road trip.
Northern State didn't back down, though, as they rallied to take the next three matches in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual taking a 12-3 lead heading into the 184 weight class match.
Kobina Henriques (Sr., 184, Miami, Fla.) managed to get the Beavers back on track with his third win of the season as he defeated David Murphy 8-7.
"It was a nice win for Kobina. He's been struggling lately," Ersland said.
After
Tobias Baker (Fr., 197, Sarasota, Fla.) got pinned in the next match extending the Wolves' lead to 12, their largest of the evening, the Beavers put their foot down and never looked back.
Mitchell Eull (So., HWT, Buffalo, Minn.) moved the score to 18-9 as he gained a 4-1 decision over Northern State's Dustin Caspers.
The Wolves forfeited their next two matches in the 125 and 133 weight classes giving Minot State a 21-18 lead heading into the final 141 match.
Tanner Crissler (Fr., 149, Belcourt, N.D.) put any doubt to rest and ended the dual with an exclamation point for Minot State as he pinned Northern's Tyler Frost in just 1:29.
Next weekend the Beavers head south to Nebraska-Kearney for a Saturday filled with duals. The Beavers' first dual is set to begin at 9 a.m.
"We've got some things we need to keep working on if we want to make the next step up the conference ladder," Ersland said.MINOT STATE 27, NORTHERN STATE 18125 –
