Beavers can't hang on against CSUSB

Minot State builds lead but falls in game 3 at Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Minot State University built a 5-2 lead over Cal State San Bernardino, but couldn't hold on as the Beavers fell for the first time at the Montana State-Billings Desert Stinger Saturday at Majestic Park.

The Beavers (2-01 overall) trailed CSUSB 2-1 entering the fifth inning, but scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead. Brittany Thorson (Jr., INF, El Paso, Texas) and Leyna Downey (Sr., OF/P, Missoula, Mont.) both had RBI singles in the fifth and MSU capitalized on two errors by the Coyotes to take the lead.

But, it was short lived as MSU gave up two runs in the fifth and then three in the sixth.

Alyssa Cornejo (So, P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) suffered the loss as she went 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and four runs with three earned. She walked three and struck out five. Mindy Lorimor (Sr. P, Thurman, Iowa) pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and three runs.

MSU finished with seven hits in the game, but didn't have any one player with more than one. Thorson finished the day going 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a runs scored. Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) went 1 for 2 with a run scored and Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) knocked in a run.

Nicole Nobbe and Alyssa Ramos had three hits apiece for the Coyotes (4-5 overall), while Victoria Lievanos knocked in three for CSUSB. Cassandra Williams pitched a complete game for the win.

Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.), Sarah Nicks (So., C, Grossmont, Calif.), Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) and Cornejo all finished with a hit apiece.

The Beavers are the nightcap at the Desert Stinger for the second straight night, taking on Azusa Pacific to finish the day.
