DULUTH, MINN. – The Minot State men's basketball team won its first Northern Sun road game of the season over Minnesota Duluth 94-64.
In the Beavers fifth conference win and the Bulldogs fourth NSIC loss the two teams were on the opposite end of the spectrum in making their shots. MSU held an opponent to less than 37 percent shooting for the fourth time this season and hit a season high 59 percent of attempted field goals.
It was the first time this season that Minot State had scored more than 90 points in a conference game and the most points scored since December 19 when the team beat Crossroads College 101-66.
The stifling defense also forced 10 turnovers, seven of them steals. That is just the second time this season the Beavers have stolen the ball that many times. MSU was able to score 16 points off of turnovers. Many of those points were scored or assisted by
Dominique McDonald (G, Sr., Raleigh, N.C.) who recorded five of the team's steals to earn a season-high mark by a Beaver.
Minot State continued its hot shooting from beyond the arch as well making 10-of-22. In eight of the last 14 games the Beavers have made at least eight three-pointers and have been shooting over 44 percent of their attempts since December 19 when
Michael Pelo (G, Sr., Charleston, Utah) began playing. Pelo made a trio of 3s, shooting 50 percent from distance.
Winston Williams (F, St., Plainfield, Ill.) led the team in scoring and rebounds with 17 points and seven boards.
Tyler Rudolph (F, So., Bismarck, N.D.) scored 15 points of his own while
Chris Davis (G, Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.)hit four three-point shots and a pair of free throws to total 14 points.
Luis Ricci Maia (G, So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) also scored in the double-digits with 11 points.
Minot State will play again, tomorrow, January 23 at St. Cloud. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
