Beavers can't overcome Wildcat 3s

WAYNE, Neb. – Minot State University was outscored 42-6 on 3-pointers as Wayne State College steadily pulled away throughout the game, topping  the Beavers 80-60 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at Rice Auditorium.

Wayne State outscored the Beavers in all four quarter, but it was just a nine-point deficit at halftime. The second half wasn't a forgiving for MSU, however, as WSC outscored Minot State 43-32.

MSU (8-13 overall, 5-10 NSIC) matched the Wildcats in most categories, hitting 43 percent from the field compared to 45 for WSC, outscored the Wildcats 12-6 from the free throw line and had just four more turnovers.

But while Wayne State (12-8, 9-6) flourished from beyond the arc, hitting 14 of 37 3s, Minot State sunk just 2 of 11 overall and in the end, the Beavers finished with 24 total turnovers.

"Defensively, we played extremely hard, but every time we made a push, they would hit a 3 on us," said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "We also had 24 turnovers tonight and a lot of them were just poor decisions. We have to take better care of the ball so we have more opportunities to score and keep us off the defensive end all game."

Wayne State had four players in double figures, paced by Maggie Schulte's 23. She was 5 for 8 on 3s. Sadie Murren added 15 and Haley Moore and Paige Ballinger scored 10 each with Moore pulling down six rebounds in the win.

Savana Kingsbury (Sr., F, Omaha, Neb.) had a fine all-around game returning to her home state. She finished with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field and added six rebounds and three assists. Madison Wald (Fr, G, Minot, N.D.) added nine points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench. Sarah Lester (Sr., G, Frenchtown, Mont.) added eight points for the Beavers.

"Savana had a great game and we had great bench play," Green Gerding said. "We got good play from Wald, Hunter (Morgan Hunter, Jr., G, Invercargill, New Zealand)."

Minot State will look to regroup with a 1 p.m. matinee at Augustana University Sunday.
