MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University soccer team won its final game of the regular season against Northern State 1-0 to go undefeated in conference play and finish with an NSIC record of 14-0-1.
With an overall 15-1-1 record the Beavers broke the school record for most wins in a regular season after it was set last year at 14.
15 minutes into the game
Chloe Melton scored what would become the game's only goal off a rebound from a blocked shot taken by
Ninfa Ramirez. Melton put the ball in the goal nearly uncontested while Ramirez was credited with an assist.
"It was one of those moments where the goal is wide open and you just want to get that tap in so it was a bit frantic," Melton said. "When it hit the back of the net it was the best feeling ever."
There was a bit of added intensity to the goal from the Fleet, England native as her family made the travel to watch her play on Senior Day.
"That's the main reason it was so amazing, four years later they're back here again getting to see me play," Melton said with a smile. "Scoring in front of them was the most amazing thing in the world and I'm really thankful it happened."
With the 1-0 win it also marked the 11th shutout of the season. Senior
Leila Torres got the start and the shutout victory for her second-straight shutout and second-straight game playing a full 90 minutes. Torres, a senior usually splits time with sophomore
Erin Rafferty who also has two shutouts on the year.
"Erin and I have worked really hard with
Tyler Schochenmaier, our coach to get shutouts this year. Our defense works so hard so it's always nice to walk away with a shutout. It was a tight game today and you never know what's going to happen, but I have to credit my defenders because Erin and I wouldn't have so many shutouts if it wasn't for them."
Head coach
Jason Spain was pleased with how his team finished the season as his goal was to go undefeated in conference play. The 1-0 victory was a little tighter than he may have hoped, but he was happy with how his team played.
"They're a solid team," Spain said. "They've won five of their last six, fighting to get into the playoffs. It was a grind, we could've had a couple extra ones, but on the flip side I think we dodged a bullet or two. Overall I think we played well."
Northern State did punch its own ticket to the playoffs as they became the seven seed after all of the NSIC games finished.
Minot State will play at Herb Parker Stadium against the eighth-seeded Upper Iowa on Wednesday, November 2 at 5 p.m. for the first round of the NSIC Playoffs.
