Minot State splits a pair of nonconference games

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minot State University took out its hitting frustrations on Minnesota Crookston in game 2.

The Beavers were one-hit in game one by Bemidji State's Jessica Yost in a 5-0 loss, but broke out the bats with a 15-run, 13-hit 15-4 5-inning win in game 2, splitting two nonconference games against Northern Sun teams Sunday at St. Cloud State's Husky Dome.

"We ran into a pretty good arm today in Yost," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "She was pretty tough. We couldn't get anything going against her. In game 2, we exploded.

Minot State (6-3 overall) exploded for seven runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to take a 14-0 lead on UMC (0-8) in game 2. Eight different MSU players finished with at least one hit, while Lauren Cowden (Fr., UTL, Moorpark, Calif.) and Daniela Carbajal (Fr., INF, San Marcos, Calif.) finished with his apiece. Carbajal finished with a pair of doubles and drove in five runs, while Cowden drove in four and blasted her first home run as a Beaver.

"Cowden and Carbajal were impressive at the plate. We hit several balls hard as a team," Triplett said.

It was more than enough for Jenn Spencer (Jr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) who cruised to her second win on the weekend. She gave up seven hits, four runs – two earned – in five innings, striking out three.

"It was good to see Spencer get a couple wins this weekend," Triplett said. "She is going to play a big role in the weeks ahead."

In game 1, Yost struck out 11 MSU batters as the Beavers were off balance much of the game.

Minot State's Sarah Nicks (Jr., C, Grossmont, Calif.) had MSU's only hit, a double in the fifth inning. Minot pitcher Alyssa Cornejo (Jr., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) suffered the loss, going three innings, giving up five hits and two runs.

The Beavers are now off until spending a week in Florida where MSU will play nine games in six days.
