Overstreet Accounts for Two Touchdowns in Loss to Bemidji State

MINOT, N.D. -- Senior Larry Overstreet rushed for a touchdown and also threw a touchdown pass, but Bemidji State defeated Minot State 40-14 on Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.

Overstreet rushed for 72 yards and had a 1-yard scoring run and also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Kristopher Bueno in the second quarter to pace the Minot State offense.

Bemidji State, which improved to 5-2 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, led 26-14 at halftime but scored two third-quarter touchdowns to pull away from the Beavers.

Bemidji State rushed for 328 yards on the afternoon led by Andrew Lackowski who gained 151 yards on the ground. Tahi Nomane added 96 yards and two touchdowns for Bemidji State.

Quarterback Jordan Hein threw for 138 yards and three scores for Bemidji State, while Matt Gross caught two touchdown passes.

Zac Cunha and Andy Jones split time at quarterback for Minot State for the second straight week. Cunha was 16-of-28 for 117 yards, while Jones was 5-of-8 for 62 yards.

Overstreet, who had 111 all-purpose yards, also led the Beaver receivers with five catches for 39 yards. Bueno had four receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Marler had 11 tackles to lead the Minot State offense and he also added a sack. Donnell Vercher finished with 10 tackles, while Bryce Broome had seven tackles and an interception.

Minot State took the opening kickoff and drove into Bemidji State territory, but the drive stalled at the BSU 33-yard line. Bemidji State then took over on its own 20-yard line and drove 80 yards in seven plays capped by Hein scampering 42 yards into the end zone with 7:21 to play in the first quarter.

Minot State fumbled on its next drive and Bemidji State scored two plays later when Hein connected with Gross for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 5:44 to play in the opening quarter.

After forcing a Minot State punt, Bemidji State drove 75 yards in 11 play capped by a 2-yard touchdown rush by Nomane to up the lead to 19-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Minot State answered with an 11-play, 74-yard drive that ate up 5:10 on the clock to cut into the lead. Overstreet rushed untouched into the end zone from a yard out to cut the lead to 19-7 with 9:55 to play before halftime.

Broome halted the next Bemidji State drive with a beautiful diving interception at the Minot State 35-yard line, which marked his second interception of the season.

After a three-and-out, Bemidji State upped the lead to 26-7 when Nomane scored from 28 yards out with 4:37 to play in the second quarter.

Minot State then used a trick play to trim the lead to 26-14. On a 1-and-10 from the Bemidji State 30-yard line, Cunha threw a backwards pass to Overstreet who then found Bueno all alone in the end zone for a touchdown with 1:57 to play before the intermission.

Bemidji State opened the third quarter with an 8-play, 90-yard drive that was capped with a Hein touchdown pass to Christian Lunde with 11:59 to play in the third quarter.

Bemidji State put the game away with a 9-play, 65-yard scoring march later in the quarter. Hein threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this one fo Gross from two yards out to up the lead to 40-14.

The Beavers will return to the road for its next contest when it visits Minnesota Duluth on Saturday (Oct. 21) at 1 p.m.
