MINOT, N.D. -- Senior
Tyler Rudolph posted a double-double with 28 points and 14 rebounds and Minot State used a 29-8 run midway through the second period to pull away from Mary as the Beavers opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a 91-61 victory over the Marauders on Saturday in the Minot State Dome.
The Beavers held an 18-point lead early in the second period, but Mary trimmed the lead to 48-44 on a three-pointer by Wyatt Carr with 15:54 to play in the game.
Minot State, which remained undefeated on the season at 7-0, then ripped off its game-changing run to coast to the victory.
Russ Davis, who finished with 15 points, drilled a three-pointer to push the Beavers lead to 51-44 at the 15:33 mark of the second to begin the Beavers run. Two free throws by
David Akibo and a layup by Rudolph extended the lead to 55-44 before Keith Hunter scored inside for the Marauders to trim the lead to 55-46 at the 13:18 mark of the second.
After Akibo and Matthew Kreklow exchanged baskets, the Beavers reeled off 14 consecutive points to take a 71-48 lead with 7:18 remaining in the game.
Minot State took its largest lead of the contest when
Brandon Green drained a three-pointer to push the margin to 89-58 with just under a minute to play in regulation.
For Rudolph, it marked the 28th double-double in his illustrious career and his 18th double-double in the Minot State Dome. Also, it marked his fourth career double-double against Mary which is his most against any one opponent.
Rudolph had plenty of offensive help as Minot State scored over 90 points for the third time this season and the second consecutive game.
Davis had 15 points, while
Luis Ricci Maia added 14 points, five assists and two steals for Minot State. Ten of the 11 Minot State players who saw action scored as
Nathaniel Moore had nine points and Akibo and
Max Cody each finished with seven points.
The Beavers shot 56.3 percent from the floor, including a blistering 62.5 percent in the second half. Minot State also shot a season-high 58.8 percent from the three-point line and also made 75.0 percent of its free throw attempts.
Additionally, the Beavers turned the ball over only nine times, which marked the fourth time in seven games Minot State has had less than 10 turnovers.
Mary, which dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, was led by Hunter who scored 13 points. Trevor Zacher added 12 points and Carr finished with 10 points for the Marauders.
Minot State returns to action on Friday (Dec. 1) when it hosts Northern State at 8 p.m. in the Minot State Dome. The Beavers will then conclude its seven-game homestand with an NSIC game against Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 6 p.m. in the MSU Dome.
