A LOOK AT THE WEEK: Minot State will host Minnesota State University Moorhead at the MSU Dome on Thursday, February 16 and will travel to Northern State on Friday, February 17. The Northern Sun duals will each start at 7 p.m.
RECORDS: The Beavers are 4-14, 0-6 NSIC after a 22-19 home win against Dickinson State last Thursday. The Dragons will come to Minot after winning their second NSIC dual of the year against Southwest Minnesota State 23-13. MSU Moorhead improved to 5-9 after its dual with the Mustangs. The Wolves are coming off of a 38-6 loss to Minnesota State and have an overall record of 4-11.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Evan Forde is in his second season at the helm of the wrestling team. He is the eighth coach in MSU history and the second coach since the reinstatement of the team and the move to NCAA Division II. Forde is 8-28 in his career. Kris Nelson is in his eight season as the head coach of MSU Moorhead. He has coached three All-Americans, Nelson has coached the Dragons to a 46-57 record in his first seven seasons. Rocky Burkett is in his second season as the head coach at Northern State. In his first season at NSU he led the Wolves to a 7-14 record.
RANKINGS: Northern State is tied as the 19th ranked team in the February 1 d2wrestle.com National Rankings, MSU Moorhead received votes, while Minot State did not.
ALL-TIME AT A GLANCE: Minot State has yet to defeat Minnesota State University Moorhead since moving to Division II in 2011. The Dragons have a 5-0 record against the Beavers in that time. MSU has fared better against Northern State with a 2-3 record against the Wolves.
LAST TIME OUT: Last season, Minot State dropped a pair of NSIC duals against MSUM and DSU. The Beavers fell 30-9 in Moorhead, Minn., with
Tanner Crissler (141),
Marcus Polak (157) and
Mitchell Eull (HWT) all picking up wins. It was Eull's 20th win of the season. Against NSU, the Beavers battled right to the end, falling 24-21 at home. MSU finsihed with five wins, but forfeited at 125 and allowed two pins as NSU outpointed the Beavers. Crissler, Eull and Polak all picked up their second wins of the week, while
Carlos Toledano (165) added a tight 4-3 victory for teh Beavers.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State currently has six wrestlers who are .500 or better and two others who could reach that points this weekend.
Carlos Toledano leads the way with a 13-5 record for the best winning percentage.
Shane Sheppard (12-12) and
Jake Belland (10-11) both could move to .500 or better with two bouts remaining.
NOTING THE DRAGONS: Minnesota State University Moorhead is coming off a win against Southwest Minnesota State. It is the second NSIC victory for the Dragons this season. Before defeating the Mustangs, MSU Moorhead lost 32-9 to Augustana. Blake Bosch, a 133-pound senior, is the second-ranked wrestler in the country at his weight.
NOTING THE WOLVES: Both Northern State and Minot State will look to get their first NSIC win this week as they both hold an 0-6 record against teams in the league. Recently, the Wolves lost to Dickinson State 24-20, a team that the Beavers defeated 22-19. In their latest dual against Minnesota State the Wolves won two matches with Tyler Stenberg (149) and Joe Gomez (HWT).
LAST WEEK: The Beavers kept head coach
Evan Forde's streak in home, non-conference duals alive last week with a 22-19 win against Dickinson State. Forde is now 3-0 at home in non-conference duals since joining MSU last season.
Jered Sublet recorded a pin for the Beavers at 141 while
Carlos Toledano won his match by major decision at 174.
COLD IN FEBRUARY: Minot State has not seen much success on the mat in the shortest month of the year. Since joining the Division II rankings in 2011 the Beavers have recorded a 3-17 record in February duals. The victory against DSU broke a 10-dual losing streak in February and was the first win for MSU in the month since the 2013-14 season when the Beavers finished with back-to-back wins against Mary and Northern State.
