ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University blanked Mayville State in a pair of nonconference NCAA Division II softball games Wednesday at the Presentation Dome.
The Beavers rolled to an 11-0 win in five innings in game 1 and didn't let up, winning 10-0 in six innings in game 2.
"Today was one of those days where we pitched well, hit well, ran the bases well and played great defense," MSU head coach
Bill Triplett said. "It was a total team effort."
Minot State (6-5 overall) wasted little time in game 1 getting the upper hand as the Beavers scored five runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third to jump out to a 10-0 lead.
Lauren Cowden and
Skyla Neubauer had three hits apiece and combined for four runs scored. Cowden,
Tori Zimmermann and
Ashley Hill all finished with two runs batted in and Zimmermann, Hill,
Rachel Burdette and
Jordan Grant had two hits apiece.
MSU outhit Mayville State 15-4 in game 1.
"We banged out 15 hits in game 1 led by Lauren and Skyla," Triplett said. "And the meat of the order – Burdette, Zimmermann and Hill – continue to drive the ball."
Jenn Spencer worked three innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts to earn her third win of the season.
Emma Casey scattered three hits in two innings in relief.
"Spencer was dominate in the circle with seven strikeouts in just three innings," added Triplett.
In game 2, the Beavers staked Casey to a 2-0 lead after the first inning to help the freshman earn her first win of her collegiate career. Casey worked three innings, giving up just two hits with a strikeout in the win.
Clarissa Ramirez scattered two hits and
Sydney Prigge cleaned up the sixth with a strikeout as MSU pitching finished off the shutout allowing just four hits in game 2 for a total of eight.
"We got Casey a lead in the second game right away with runs in the first," Triplett said. "She kept the shutout intact in game 1 and was solid in game 2."
MSU tacked on two more runs in the third and exploded for six in the sixth to finish with 11 hits. Hill smacked her fourth home run of the season and drove in two, while Burdette had a triple and drove in three runs with three hits. Hill, Zimmermann and Grant all finished with two hits.
