No. 21 Winona State Spoils Beavers Homecoming

MINOT, N.D. -- No. 21 Winona State rushed for 335 yards and the Warriors spoiled Minot State's homecoming with a 47-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over the Beavers on Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.

The Warriors used three big plays and four field goals from Carter McCauley to remain undefeated on the season. In addition to the four field goals, Winona State got a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown, a 52-yard run for a touchdown and a 33-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Larry Overstreet caught five passes for 59 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 17 yards to lead the Minot State offense. Lane Torgerson also hauled in five catches for the Beavers, while Lavante Bushnell and Ryan Fila each had two receptions.

Zac Cunha and Andy Jones split time at quarterback as Cunha was 7-of-16 for 63 yards and a touchdown, while Jones was 10-of-15 for 92 yards.

Minot State, which dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play, was led defensively by Donnell Vercher who had 10 tackles and an interception. Justin Gonzales finished with three tackles and an interception, while Matt Marler had nine tackles and a fumble recovery.

Winona State, which improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter when McCauley connected on a 40-yard field goal giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead with 9:00 to play in the opening quarter.

The Warriors extended the lead to 10-0 at the 7:22 mark of the first quarter when Jake Balliu returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown.

Winona State led 13-0 after the first quarter when McCauley connected from 28 yards out to cap a 10-play, 81-yard drive.

The Warriors upped the lead to 20-0 early in the second quarter when Owen Burke connected with Dustin Iverson for a 7-yard scoring strike with 11:45 to play before halftime.

The Beavers got their offense rolling in the second quarter following a fourth-down stop by the Minot State defense. Minot State used a nine-play, 66-yard drive which was capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Cunha to Overstreet to trim the lead to 20-7 with 5:24 to play before halftime.

Minot State had two chances to further cut into the lead before halftime, but could not capitalize on either opportunity.

Marler recovered a fumble by Eric Birth and returned it 19 yards to the Winona State 35-yard line with 3:15 to play before the half, but the Beavers went three-and-out to turn the ball back over to Winona State.

On the Warriors next drive, Gonzales intercepted a Burke pass at the Winona State 20-yard line, but the Beavers field goal attempt was blocked by Cole Monckton to end the threat.

Following the blocked punt, Javian Roebuck raced in from 52 yards out to extend the Warriors lead to 27-7 at the 1:09 mark of the second quarter. The Warriors took a 30-7 lead into halftime when McCauley connected from 30 yards out with four seconds to play in the second quarter.

Winona State tacked on 17 more points in the second half to close out the scoring.

Minot State returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 30) when it visits Mary for a NSIC contest scheduled to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. on a game to be televised on the Midco Sports Network.
