ABERDEEN, S.D. --
Shelby Spuller recorded a double-double with a season-high 22 kills and a season-high 13 digs, but Minot State suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 15-10) loss to Minnesota Crookston in the Beavers opening match of the Max and Erma's Classic hosted by Northern State.
Minot State, which dropped to 3-3 on the season, also lost to Minnesota State 25-15, 25-21, 25-11 on the opening day of the two-day tournament.
The Beavers appeared well on their way to a win in the opening match against Minnesota Crookston. Minot State held a 2-1 advantage after taking the third set by a 25-21 score, but the Golden Eagles would rally to win the final two sets to claim the match.
Minot State was on the break of victory as it held a 24-21 advantage following a kill by
Brileigh Boyce and two Minnesota Crookston errors. The Golden Eagles fought back to tie the match at 24-24 on two kills by Kassi Green and a Minot State attack error.
Spuller ripped a kill putting the Beavers back in front at 25-24, but Green answered with another kill to knot the set at 25-25. The Golden Eagles then used a kill by Deaira Gresham and a Minot State attack error to clinch the set.
Minnesota Crookston, which improved to 2-3 on the season, won the fifth set 15-10 to claim the win.
Jeanne Brenner had a season-best 19 kills for the Beavers, while Boyce added 13 kills.
Kelsey Dewulf also posted a double-double for Minot State as she had 57 assists and 13 digs.
Karli Koza led the Beaver defense with a season-best 32 digs.
Spuller also led Minot State against Minnesota State as she finished with eight kills and nine digs. Boyce had six kills and
Hayley Swain and
Emily Falldorf each added four kills.
Dewulf posted 20 assists and eight digs, while Koza finished with 13 digs.
Minot State will conclude tournament play on Saturday (Sept. 9) as it faces Northern State at 12:15 p.m. and South Dakota Mines at 4:45 p.m.
