MINOT, N.D. -- Senior
Tyler Rudolph tallied 29 points and Minot State set a school single-season record for NCAA Division II wins as the Beavers topped Concordia-St. Paul 80-67 on Saturday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game in the Minot State Dome.
With the win, Minot State improved to 16-2 overall and 10-2 in the NSIC. The 16 wins is the most the Beavers have compiled in a season since joining Division II and surpasses the previous high of 15 victories set during the 2015-16 season.
Rudolph led four players in double figures with his 29 points and finished the game 9-of-17 from the floor, 2-of-4 from the three-point line and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. He also added five rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal in his 33 minutes of action.
Luis Ricci Maia had another outstanding game as he finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Nathaniel Moore came off the Minot State bench and tallied 15 points and six assists, while
David Akibo finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Concordia-St. Paul, which dropped to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in league play, was led by Avan Ward who scored 18 points, while Bryndan Matthews finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Bears.
Minot State used a late second-half run to pull away from the pesky Golden Bears.
The Beavers held a 61-59 lead with 8:34 to play in the second half before going on a game-deciding 10-0 run.
Ricci Maia started the run with a three-pointer and then added a jumper to push the Minot State lead to 66-59 at the 7:09 mark of the second half.
Akibo followed with a layup and Rudolph capped the run with a three-point play that gave Minot State a 71-59 lead with 5:19 remaining in the game.
Concordia-St. Paul quickly cut the lead to eight points, but Rudolph scored inside and Ricci Maia drilled a three-pointer giving Minot State a 76-63 lead with 3:19 to play.
Concordia-St. Paul jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and led 16-10 following a three-pointer by Ward at the 14:27 mark of the first half.
Minot State used a 12-0 run late in the first half, which was fueled by six points from Akibo and four points from
Russ Davis, to take a 36-28 lead with 4:40 to play before halftime.
Minot State built a 10-point lead late in the first half, but the Golden Bears closed the half on a 5-0 run to climb to within 40-35 at the intermission.
Concordia-St. Paul opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 42-40 lead with 17:55 to play. The Golden Bears held a three-point lead at the 16:23 mark of the second half before the Beavers rallied to regain the lead for good.
A pair of free throws by Rudolph brought the Beavers to within one point of the lead and Moore put Minot State ahead to stay with a layup with 15:14 to play in the game.
Minot State will next see action on Friday (Jan. 19) when it visits Bemidji State for an NSIC contest beginning at 8 p.m. The Beavers will then play at Minnesota Crookston on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 6 p.m.
