Beavers Get Back on Track Behind Akibo

MINOT, N.D. -- Junior David Akibo scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds and senior Tyler Rudolph scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Minot State snapped a six-game losing streak with a 78-62 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Friday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game in the Minot State Dome.

The Beavers, who have already secured the No. 3 spot in the North Division for the upcoming NSIC Tournament, improved to 18-9 overall and 12-9 in the NSIC. Minnesota Crookston dropped to 10-17 overall and 7-14 in conference play with the loss.

Akibo registered his second-highest point total of the season by finishing the game 9-of-19 from the floor, 3-of-7 from the three-point line and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. He also added two blocked shots, a steal and an assist.

Rudolph added his 34th career double-double as he was 7-of-12 from the floor and 1-of-1 from the three-point line. It marked his 21st career double-double in the Minot State Dome and his fourth career double-double versus Minnesota Crookston.

The Beavers also got 14 points and six rebounds from Russ Davis, while Luis Ricci Maia had seven points and nine assists.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Harrison Cleary who scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Alan Hodge finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Minot State, which shot 43.8 percent from the floor for the game, took control of the contest from the outset. The Beavers used a 13-3 run to take a 13-5 lead with 14:42 to play in the first period.

Akibo and Rudolph each scored four points during the run and Davis capped the outburst with a three-pointer giving the Beavers an early eight-point lead.

The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to 15-9, but Davis responded with a three-pointer to push the lead to 18-9 with 11:30 to play before halftime.

Following a layup by Javier Nicolau, Akibo drained a three-pointer and Max Cody connected on a jumper giving Minot State a 23-11 lead at the 8:57 mark of the first half.

Minnesota Crookston whittled the lead to seven points with 2:26 to play before halftime, but the Beavers closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 37-24 lead into the intermission.

The second half was all Minot State as the Golden Eagles never got the lead below 13 points and the Beavers took their largest lead of the game at 78-56 on a layup by Nathaniel Moore with 1:50 remaining in the game.

Minot State will conclude the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 17) when it hosts Bemidji State at 6 p.m. in the Minot State Dome. Saturday also marks Senior Day for the Beavers as Rudolph, Davis, Moore, Ricci Maia and Brandon Green will play their final regular season home game in the Dome.
