Larson, Long Ball Help Beavers Clinch NSIC Tournament Berth

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Senior Kyla Larson homered and drove in six runs and Minot State hit five home runs on its way to sweeping Concordia-St. Paul in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday to clinch a berth in the NSIC Tournament. The Beavers scored seven runs in the ninth inning to win the opener 11-4 and then rallied from a 7-3 deficit to win game two 9-7.

With the two wins, Minot State concludes the regular season with a 25-22 overall record and a 12-14 mark in the NSIC. The Beavers finished ninth in the regular season standings, while Winona State won the regular season title.

Larson was 2-for-5 and drove in a run in game one and then was 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs in the second game. The five RBIs tied her career high, which she also set against Concordia-St. Paul on April 17, 2016.

Lauren Cowden and Isis Cabral homered for the Beavers in game one, while Tori Zimmermann, Larson and Haley Hernandez each went deep in game two. Laura Mendez picked up both wins in the circle for the Beavers as she pitched a combined 14 innings to improve to 14-13 on the season.

Minot State appeared on its way to an easy victory in game one before the Golden Bears rallied to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

After a scoreless three innings, Minot State broke through for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Zimmermann singled to left to lead off the inning and moved to third on a double by Cabral. The Beavers loaded the bases when Aubry Johnson was hit by a pitch and Ashley Hill ripped a double down the leftfield line to score both Zimmermann and Cabral giving Minot State a 2-0 lead.

Hernandez upped the lead to 3-0 when she produced an RBI groundout that brought home Johnson with the Beavers third run.

Minot State upped the lead to 4-0 when Cabral blasted her sixth homer of the season in the top of the sixth inning.

Mendez had been sailing along until running into trouble in the seventh inning. The Golden Bears loaded the bases with one out and Anyka Knoche delivered a grand slam to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings.

Minot State blew the game open in the top of the ninth inning with seven runs. Cowden hit a two-run homer for the Beavers, while Hill scored a pair of runs with a double and Hernandez added a two-run single to highlight the inning.

Minot State did the rallying in the second game as the Beavers fought back from a 7-3 deficit to record the win.

Concordia-St. Paul, which dropped to 28-22 overall and 13-15 in the NSIC, scored three runs in the first inning and added one more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Minot State got the bats going in the third inning when Larson hit a three-run homer to left to trim the lead to 4-3.

The Golden Bears countered with a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 7-3.

Minot State used another three-run inning to get right back into the game. Cowden led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second when Julia Suchan reached on an error. Following a groundout, which moved up both runners, Larson ripped a double to bring home both runners and cut the Golden Bears lead to 7-5. Cabral followed with a single to centerfield scoring Larson and bringing Minot State to within 7-6.

Minot State tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when Hernandez hit her first home run of the season to centerfield.

Zimmermann put the Beavers ahead to stay in the top of the seventh inning when she homered to left giving Minot State an 8-7 lead. Minot State added an insurance run later in the inning when Hill reached on an error, which allowed Larson to score.

The NSIC Tournament will be played on May 3-5 at Bowden Field and Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
