Robbins, Mendez Propel Beavers to Saturday Sweep

MINOT, N.D. – Freshman Zoya Robbins launched her first two collegiate home runs of her career and senior Laura Mendez tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Minot State softball team to victories over Black Hills State and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium.
 
With the victories, the Beavers improve to 3-2 on the season.

How It Happened
  • The Yellow Jackets struck first, scoring a run in the top of the third to take the early lead.
  • Minot State answered in the bottom half of the inning when Robbins blasted a two-run home run to right field, giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
  • BHSU capitalized on a pair of Beaver turnovers to tie the game at two in the third inning.
  • Freshman Randi Wright posted her first collegiate home run to give the Beavers the lead before Alina Gonzalez roped an RBI double to left, scoring Julia Suchan and doubling the Beaver lead to 4-2.
  • Minot State tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Robbins blasted her second home run to center field.

  • Wright and Robbins led the team with two hits apiece.
  • Robbins hit 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Maggie Mercer, Karlee Coughlin, Jamie Odlum, Rianna Aasen and Gonzaled recorded one hit each.
  • In the circle, Robbins improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings of work.

How It Happened
  • In a dual between the pitchers, both teams put together a threat early, but couldn't take advantage as the Beavers left three runners on base in the first inning and the Golden Eagles left a trio of runners on base in the second inning.
  • The Beavers broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh when Mercer hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Aasen.
  • With a 1-0 lead, Mendez drew a pair of groundouts and notched a strike out to clinch the shutout victory.

  • Suchan, Aasen and Odlum combined for Minot State's three hits in the game.
  • Coughlin drew two walks.
  • Mendez tossed seven innings while allowing two runs and striking out a pair to improve to 1-1 on the early start of the season.
 
What's Next
The Beavers return to action tomorrow as they take on Black Hills State at 9 a.m. and Minnesota Crookston at 11 a.m. in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium.
