Extra-Inning Victory Caps Sunday Split

MINOT, N.D. – Facing a five-run deficit, the Minot State softball team tallied six unanswered runs, including one in extra innings, to pick up a 6-5 victory in eight innings and split a Sunday doubleheader with Northern State in the Air-Supported Dome.
 
The Beavers are now 11-6 on the season while the Wolves are 8-10.

How It Happened
  • Northern State opened the scoring with a run in the second inning.
  • Minot State took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Haley Hernandez lifted a two-run home run over the fence in center field, scoring Randi Wright and giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
  • The Beavers walked or hit four NSU batters in the fourth inning as the Wolves took advantage to retake the lead at 4-2.
  • Julia Suchan singled up the middle in the fourth inning before scoring on an infield single by Hernandez to cut the NSU lead in half.
  • The Wolves added a trio of runs on three hits and a Minot State error in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Maggie Mercer opened the fifth inning with a bunt single and later scored on an RBI double by Alina Gonzalez in the fifth inning.
  • The Beavers scored their final run of the contest when Karlee Coughlin singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
  • Northern State scored a run in the sixth before tacking on a pair of runs in the seventh inning to clinch the 10-5 victory.

  • Hernandez and Wright led the Beavers at the plate with two hits apiece.
  • Hernandez tallied a team-high three RBIs while five other Beavers recorded one hit.

How It Happened
  • The Wolves carried the momentum of the game one victory into the second game, scoring one run in the opening frame before hanging four runs on the Beavers in the second inning to take a quick 5-0 advantage.
  • Minot State scored two runs in the third inning on Gonzalez's RBI groundout and Coughlin's RBI single to cut the NSU lead to 5-2.
  • Suchan began the fourth inning with a triple before coming home on an error by the Wolves.
  • With the bases loaded, Lauren Cowden ripped a two-RBI double to left field, scoring Kiera Shwaluk and Hernandez and tying the game at five.
  • With the international tie-breaker in play, Wright opened the eighth inning with a single through the right side, allowing Suchan to score from second.

  • Wright and Coughlin led Minot State with two hits apiece.
  • Cowden and Wright tallied two RBIs each while Gonzalez and Coughlin added one each.
  • Freshman Zoya Robbins earned the complete-game victory and improved to 5-2 on the season.
