Big games from Chapman, Elliott not enough in Minot State's 70-66 loss to Maryville

MARSHALL, Minn. -- Lucy Chapman scored 23 points and Natasha Elliott added 17 more, but the Beavers fell to the Maryville (Mo.) Saints 70-66 on Saturday.

Chapman led the Beavers (2-5) with 23 points and three steals. Elliott added 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals off the bench, and Amber Stevahn chipped in as well with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Minot State out-rebounded Maryville (MO) 40-31 in Saturday's game, led by Stevahn's nine boards. The Beavers also collected 14 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.

Minot State forced 18 Maryville (MO) turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Elliott's four steals led the way for Minot State.

Chapman and Kate Head both set NCAA Division II-era school records in the contest, Chapman tying the record for 3-pointers made in a single game with 6, and Head breaking the record assists in a single game with 11.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-7, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 2:53 left in the first quarter to take a 14-8 lead. The Beavers entered the quarter break with a 16-10 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.

Minot State built that first quarter lead to 30-19 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:15 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 36-19. The Saints cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 40-24 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 24 points close to the basket.

Minot State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Stevahn, to expand its lead further to 45-24 with 8:10 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Saints had cut into that lead, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-41 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.

Maryville (MO) proceeded to take a 65-58 lead before Minot State went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 65-63 with 54 seconds to go in the contest. Maryville (MO) responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-66. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.
