MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team broke open a 49-49 tie entering the fourth quarter and defeated the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles 70-63 at home Friday.
The Beavers (5-8, 3-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kate Head tacked on 15 points and Anna Counts chipped in as well with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Minot State grabbed 35 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Minnesota-Crookston's 34, led by Counts' 13 boards.
Minot State forced 13 Minnesota-Crookston turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor.
How It Happened
Minot State started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a three from Janie Wunderlich, to take an early lead with 7:58 left in the first quarter. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 13-12.
Minot State chipped away at that deficit and built a 26-23 lead before going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kennedy Harris, to increase its lead to 36-23. The Golden Eagles cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.
The Beavers had lost that lead by the end of the third quarter and entered the fourth frame with the score tied 49-49. Minot State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 13 third-quarter points.
Minot State then grabbed a 58-56 lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Stevahn's jumper, to grow its advantage to 64-56 with 3:00 to go in the contest. The Golden Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-63 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
