BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Minot State University volleyball team got its spring-season underway at the University of Mary Marauders on Wednesday night in Bismarck, N.D. The Beavers fell by a 3-1 final score to open the non-traditional campaign.
It was the first match against a non-intrasquad opponent since November 16, 2019, when the Beavers finished the regular season against Southwest Minnesota State with a 3-0 loss.
The Beavers dropped the first two sets 25-12, 25-20 before coming back with a 25-23 victory in the third set to force a fourth set and then fell 25-12 in the fourth set to cap a 3-1 loss.
Kayla Verity led the team with 11 kills and was second behind
Roxy King (30 attacks) with 29 total attacks. Verity posted an attack percentage of .138 alongside two blocks and a team-leading 12 points. The Beavers posted a total of 14 blocks as a team and 50 digs alongside 142 attacks and 39 total kills.
UMary opened the first set with a 7-1 run that was momentarily broken by a kill from Verity but the Marauders outscored the Beavers 18-11 from that point to take the first set 25-12. The second set was a tightly-contested back and forth match until UMary went on a 7-3 run to stretch its advantage to 20-15 and despite MSU cutting the deficit to two points 21-19 late in the second match, the Marauders pulled away for a five-point win 25-20.
The Beavers battled back in the third set despite falling behind early 12-5. Minot State rallied to outscore UMary 7-2 and cut the deficit to two, 14-12. The Beavers then went on a 5-2 run to grab a one-point lead 17-16. A big kill by
Caitlyn Messner was the point that pushed Minot State in front before UMary grabbed the next two points and took back a lead 18-17.
MSU went on a 5-1 run to stretch its lead to the largest of the match 22-19. A service ace by
Sophia Peterson gave the Beavers a three-point lead and despite the Marauders cutting it to a one-point advantage 24-23, Verity sent home a kill off an assist by Peterson to grab the set 25-23 and earn a point in the match, force a fourth set, and trail 2-1 at that point.
In the fourth set, the Marauders pushed out to a 17-9 advantage and coasted to a 25-12 win to clinch the game 3-1.
