Minot State Soccer falls 3-0 Against Minnesota State Mankato on the road

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minot State University soccer team fell 3-0 against Minnesota State Mankato on the road Friday.

The Beavers suffered their first loss of the regular season and fall to 3-1 overall after dropping a 3-0 decision at Minnesota State. The Mavericks move to 1-0 with their season-opening three-goal win.

MSU held a 7-4 shot advantage at the halfway point but could not capitalize on its chances including a shot off the post just a couple of minutes before the halftime break.

The Beavers committed a foul in the box and Brynn Desens put home the penalty kick to put the Mavericks in front 1-0 at the 29:31-minute marking in the first half.

MSU entered halftime trailing 1-0 after recording only two shots on goal, compared to three on the net for Minnesota State. Both goalies made two saves in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Mavericks came out for the second half ready to go as Jenny Vetter shot one past goalie Maddie Kindred just over five minutes into the second 45 minutes. Vetter scored her first of the season off of an assist from Desens to give Minnesota State a 2-0 lead at 50:42.

Minnesota State scored again seven minutes later at 57:42 when Vetter put one to the right of Kindred and into the back of the net to extend its lead to 3-0.

The Beavers continued to push the play and outshot the Mavericks 16-11 overall but could not get the high-quality chance they were working toward and fell by a 3-0 final score.

Melanie van Walstijn led the Beavers with two shots on goal and four shots in total. Sofia Lewis took four shots but did not test Mavericks' goalie Mackenzie Rath.

Minot State soccer is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 7, as it takes on Augustana in the Minnesota State University Dome Tournament at 12:30 p.m.
