MINOT, ND --Kate Head scored a career-high 23 points to help lead the Minot State women's basketball team past the Concordia-Saint Paul Golden Bears 81-70 at home Saturday.
Head added five rebounds and nine assists to her 23 point game to lead the Beavers (8-10, 6-5). Amber Stevahn helped out with 18 points and nine rebounds and Janie Wunderlich chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Minot State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 17 assists on 32 made field goals. Head's nine assists were the most for the Beavers and Emma Mogen also added four assists of her own.
The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Concordia-Saint Paul turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Wunderlich's four steals led the way individually for the Beavers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 8:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Stevahn, to take a 6-5 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 23-19.
The Beavers and Golden Bears then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 37-33 in favor of Concordia-Saint Paul.
Concordia-Saint Paul continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-33 advantage before Minot State went on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Natasha Elliott, to grab a 46-39 lead with 5:42 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Bears had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-57 edge. Minot State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 12 of the team's 25 third-quarter points.
Minot State kept widening the lead to 61-59 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Head's jumper, to grow the lead to 68-59 with 6:00 to go in the contest. The Beavers continued expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 81-70 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 23 total points.
