Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cook's game-winner lifts Minot State over host Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. -- Jalen Cook hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in the game to put the Minot State men's basketball team up for good in an 80-79 win against the Wayne State Wildcats on the road Friday in NSIC action.

The Beavers (8-7 overall, 5-6 NSIC) had four players score in double figures led by Jaxon Gunville, who had 22 points. Khari Broadway added 18 points and Connor Hollenbeck helped out with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Led by Hollenbeck's four offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 10 second-chance points.

Coach's Comments
"Our guys played extremely hard tonight," Minot STate's Matt Murken said. "Even when we got behind, as they would come to the bench they had the 10 other guys on the team telling them we were going to win. Just a tremendous job by our bench guys bringing energy. We gutted out a tough one tonight!"

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-15, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 11:25 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Cook, to take a 22-17 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-36 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 37 points.

Wayne State proceeded to take a 79-72 lead before Minot State went on an 8-0 run over the final 2 minutes, finished off by Cook's three, to seize an 80-79 lead with 27 seconds to go in the contest. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 80-79 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period as non-starters accounted for 19 of its 43 total points.
