Minot State puts up fight but falls to visiting Winona State

MINOT, ND -- The Minot State men's basketball team got a 26-point showing from the bench, but fell 67-58 to the Winona State Warriors at home Friday in NSIC action.
 

The Beavers (9-8 overall, 6-7 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Jaxon Gunville, who had 13 points. Khari Broadway tacked on 11 points and Caleb Van De Griend chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench.
 

The Minot State offense was very productive from three-point land, pouring in 10 threes on 28 attempts. Gunville was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining four treys in the contest.
 

Minot State did a great job disrupting Winona State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Connor Hollenbeck led the way individually for the Beavers with two rejections.
 

Coach's Comments
"We got out competed tonight," Minot State coach Matt Murken said. "We have to be better in a lot of areas. That falls on the head coach. I have to be better. We will be ready to go tomorrow night."

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-5, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 13:06 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Van De Griend, to narrow its deficit to 11-10. The Beavers then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed a 29-28 lead heading into halftime. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 29 points.
 

Winona State proceeded to take a 56-43 lead before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Broadway's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 56-48 with 4:23 to go in the contest. Winona State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 67-58. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 29 points.
