Minot State secures 72-61 win over Upper Iowa on fourth-quarter comeback

MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team rallied from a 45-44 deficit after the third quarter to knock off the Upper Iowa Peacocks 72-61 at home Saturday.
 

The Beavers (9-11) had four players score in double figures. Kennedy Harris led with 18 points and two steals, Kate Head tacked on 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Emma Mogen rounded off 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
 

Minot State out-rebounded Upper Iowa 39-37 in Saturday's game, paced by Head's nine boards.
 

Minot State's defense held Upper Iowa to only 31.3 percent shooting from the field.

Coach's Comments
"Excellent weekend for our team!" Minot State coach Mike Brandt said. "Tonight was simply a gut check for us! Nothing was really pretty - but we fought hard and found a way to get the job done.

"Our confidence is climbing up. Having two guards with each being one rebound from a double-double speaks volumes about their toughness! Winning four of the last six games is great this time of year. Hopefully we can continue to play our best basketball done the stretch!"
 

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-7, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 3:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Harris, to take a 13-10 lead. The Beavers then slipped off its lead but entered the quarter break with a 13-12 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
 

Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 4:07 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 33-23, a score that would hold until halftime. Minot State scored five of its 20 total points in the period on second chance opportunities created by pulling down on offensive rebounds.
 

The Peacocks increased it's offense in the third quarter and gained the advantage against Minot State, leaving the Beavers at 45-44 entering the fourth. Minot State answered back in the fourth, played well near the basket, and scored six of its 11 points in the paint.
 

Minot State managed to gain control and had a 57-53 lead before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Harris' three, to grow the lead to 66-53 with 1:20 to go in the contest. The Peacocks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-61 win. Minot State took advantage of five Upper Iowa turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
