MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers are back in the swing of things, returning to the diamond for the first time in nearly three weeks to host a pair of non-conference doubleheaders in the Air-Supported Dome on the Minot State campus.
Rolling into town is the University of Regina, a club team from Canada which is looking to get in some offseason experience against Minot State, which itself is looking to fine-tune its game before the start of the NSIC race in a little more than a week.
Action gets underway with first pitch scheduled for noon each day this weekend as the two teams square off on Saturday, March 18, and Sunday, March 19, in "The Bubble."
The Beavers come in looking to snap a four-game skid dating back to a weekend tournament in Branson, Missouri. And being at home should help as Minot State (9-9 overall) is a resounding 7-1 playing in "The Bubble" this season.
With the wild winter weather outside, that likely will be the location where the Beavers open NSIC play, as well, as Minot State is slated to host the University of Mary in a doubleheader on March 28, then Minnesota Duluth on April 1, and St. Cloud State on April 2.
All three have been busy on the diamond while the Beavers have had the last three weeks off, making this weekend's action against the visiting Cougars extra important for Minot State to get back into the rhythm of gameday.
So far this season, freshman pitcher
Calley Olson and sophomore pitcher Reagan Floyd have led the way in the circle, each collecting four wins with Olson holding a 4.28 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 36 innings, and Floyd a 4.86 ERA with 37 Ks in 40 1/3 innings.
Offensively, junior
Gabi Dawyduk – who also has pitched in five games for the Beavers – leads the way with a .388 batting average and 10 RBIs.
Balance on offense has been key, though, as senior
Leo Watson has 13 RBIs and is hitting .327, freshman
Paige Kellogg has 11 RBIs, two home runs, and is hitting .375, and sophomore
Abby Lohse (.297), junior
Brooklyn Morrison (.262), and senior
Kilee Fehd (.258) also have 10 RBIs each.
Overall, Minot State is hitting. 300 as a team and averaging 6.28 runs per game, numbers they'd like to continue, or add to, rolling into league play.
