Minot State softball closes tourney in Kansas with pair of setbacks

TOPEKA, Kan. – Junior transfer Lexie Nelson picked up her first hit as a Beaver, a grand slam, but Minot State could not push any other runs home on Tuesday, falling in a pair of non-conference games to close out the Washburn Invitational.

Nelson's blast put the Beavers (7-8 overall) on top 4-2 against 13th-ranked Central Oklahoma to start the day, but the Bronchos got their own home run, a 2-run shot in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4, walk-off win.

In the second game of the day, Minot State fell 4-0 to Fort Hays State (Kan.).

Minot State now gets 12 days off before returning to the field at the Spring Break Games in Branson, Missouri, playing Ecclesia College and Missouri Valley College on March 10.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Minot State Beavers brought a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 5-4 to the No. 13 Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Tuesday.
 
Senior Reegan Floyd (4-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State got a grand slam from junior Lexie Nelson off of senior Terin Ritz, scoring all four of their runs in the inning. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Central Oklahoma scored three times over the remaining two innings to grab the 5-4 win.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Minot State Beavers were not able to notch a run against Fort Hays State pitcher senior Morgan Schmidt on Tuesday and were shut out 4-0 by the Tigers.
 
Senior Jasmine Blizzard (2-2) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Junior Calley Olson was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minot State managed three chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The Beavers last got a runner on third in the fifth, when junior Mallory Hoogensen made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out but Minot State could not plate her run.
 
GAME NOTES
» Minot State pitchers faced 28 Fort Hays State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and six fly balls while striking out three.
» Sophomore Taylor Eatherton led the Beavers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
