Beavers win regular-season finale

Minot State battles UMary at home in NSIC first round

Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University scored two second-half goals to pull away from Northern State and finish off a 3-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win in both team's regular-season finale Sunday.

The win capped the best regular season in school history for the Beavers as they posted an 11-3-1 mark in conference play and improved to 13-3-2 overall. The 13 wins is a school record and Minot State clinched a home playoff game in its first season as a member of the NSIC. The No. 4 seeded Beavers will play host to rival University of Mary, the No. 5 seed, Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.

The Beavers opened a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tara McPartland (Sr., F, Sandy, Utah) off a corner-kick feed from Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) in the 36th minute.

The lead didn't last long however as Rachel Goslinga tied the match at one with a long feed over the defense from Tia Lopez, beating MISU goalkeeper Ashley Barzcewski (Sr., O'Fallon, Mo.) to the far post seven minutes later.

But the Beavers offense came alive in the second half and Barzcewski shut the Wolves out for the rest of the contest. Barzcewski finished with four saves, facing five shots on goal and 12 overall.

Fisher continued her solid season with the eventual game winner, scoring unassisted in the 56th minute on a long clearing that set in motion a breakaway. Jamie MacFarlane (Jr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) finished off the scoring with a rebound of her own shot in the 64th minute.

Minot State finished with 21 shots on goal, forcing Wolves goalkeeper Kourtney Woracek to make eight saves.

The 2012 NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer tournament begins Wednesday at four host sites including Minot. Regular season champion Minnesota State plays host to Minnesota Duluth, No. 2 Winona State battles St. Cloud State and No. 3 Upper Iowa takes on Bemidji State.

The semifinals and championship is played at the highest remaining seed following the first round. The winner of the NSIC/US Bank Soccer Tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament. The NCAA webcast selection show is Nov. 5.
