Gameday Notes v. MSU-Moorhead, Northern State

THIS WEEK: Minot State returns to the Minot State Dome for its first ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home double header, playing host to Minnesota State-Moorhead Friday (8 p.m.) and Northern State Saturday (6 p.m.).

RECORDS: MISU is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC and 0-0 in the NSIC North. MSU-M is 5-1 overall and 0-1 in NSIC play. NSU comes in at 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC.

COACHES CORNER: Minot State's Matt Murken begins his first season at the helm of the Beavers. He is 1-3 with Minot State and is 47-19 overall. Chad Walthall is the head coach at Moorhead and is 41-22 with the Dragons and 157-91 overall. Northern State's head coach is Paul Sather who is 28-29 with NSU and 122-91 overall.

RANKINGS: Minot State, MSU-Moorhead and Northern State were not ranked in the latest NABC Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll.

RECENT HISTORY: The Beavers fell 77-65 on the road at the University of Mary in their first conference game in the NSIC. Northern State handed MSU-M its first loss of the season 69-66 in Aberdeen, S.D.

OVERALL SERIES: Minot State has not had much luck against MSU-M, trailing the series 17-9 overall and 0-1 as a member of the NCAA Division II. This is the first meeting between Northern State and Minot State in DII play.

NOTING THE DRAGONS: Minnesota State-Moorhead had one of its most successful seasons in school history last year, going 21-10 overall and 14-8 in the NSIC… Senior guard Anthony Tucker averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games last season. Tucker, a transfer from Winona State, scored a career-high 31 points against Valley City State… The Dragons have three players averaging in double figures as Jordan Riewer and Alex Novak join Tucker scoring more than 10 points per game. Novak was named to the All-Northern Sun second team in 2011-12… Those three have helped the Dragons to the No. 3 ranked offense in the NSIC at 77.8 points per game, hitting 51.2 percent of their shots along the way.

NOTING THE WOLVES: Northern State University's Dustin Tetzlaff averaged 19 points and 8.5 rebounds last week and was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week. He missed just three shots in two games and is the conference's leading shooter, making 70.2 percent of his field goals this season… The Wolves have struggled from the free-throw line so far this season, hitting just 57.1 percent. After starting the season 0-2, Northern State has won five straight games, including four straight at home. NSU is 4-0 at home... Home cooking has been something the Wolves take pride in, averaging 3,104 fans at home. NSU has all ready packed 12,415 fans into Wachs Arena this season, getting a season-high 3,854 fans for the home conference opener against MSU-Moorhead.

THANK YOU MINOT: Minot State is celebrating Community Appreciation Night Friday as a thank you to the city of Minot and Northwest North Dakota for its support through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The MISU Athletic Department will serve cake, coffee and lemonade in between the women's and the men's game on Friday on the third floor of the Dome. Everyone who is admitted to the games is invited to have a piece of cake.

CASHING IN THE FREE ONES, PART II: Minot State continues to be one of the top free throw shooting teams in the Northern Sun, hitting 76.4 percent. Where the Beavers need to improve is the amount of free throws taken. MISU has shot just 72 total free throws in four games, a 13.8 average. But, the Beavers opponents have averaged 19.5 free throws per game, hitting 78-111 on the season. E.J. Williams (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) has yet to miss this year, hitting all 10 free throws taken.

BALANCE AT THE TOP: The Beavers don't have a player averaging in double figures this season through four games, but have six players who have scored at least 30 points overall. Chris East (Jr., G, Toronto, Ontario) and Josh Johnson (Sr., F, Lufkin, Texas) are averaging 9.8 points per game to lead the Beavers.

COUNTING BY 3: Minot State's Thomas Korf (So., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) and Anthony Enriquez (Sr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) continue to lead the team in made 3-pointers with nine and five respectively. Korf has proven to be one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference, hitting 40.9 percent of 3s taken, averaging 2.3 makes per game. Enriquez hit three against U-Mary to push his total to five on the season in a reserve role.

DELIVERING THE GOODS: There hasn't been much freshman Dominique McDonald (G, Raleigh, N.C.) hasn't done for the Beavers to start his career. McDonald is averaging 8.3 points and 2.8 rebounds for Minot State and paces the team with 17 assists. His 17-6 assist-to-turnover ratio (2.83) is third in the NSIC. He has dished out five assists three times in four games.
