Beavers blast Dragons

Minot State scores seven, Fisher four in rout

Box Score MINOT, N.D.  – Minot State University soccer opened up their 2012 NCAA Division II schedule with a bang, as they handled the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons 7-1 in a non-conference match Thursday at Herb Parker Stadium.

The Beavers scored early and often in their regular season opener, as Zoe Fisher (So., Center Midfielder, Cambridgeshire, England) completed a hat-trick in the first 13 minutes of the game. Fisher used a series of nifty moves and solid speed on every goal she scored and even employed a little luck as one shot banged in off the right post.

“I thought our girls played extremely well today,” said head coach Jason Spain. “Zoe came ready to play and it showed. It was really fun to watch and be a part of the energy we had today. Moorhead was a great opponent, and they made us better today. I am just very happy how hard we played today.”

MSUM battled back to score a goal of their own, as Erin Nyberg found the net for the Dragons at the 34 minute mark.

But Minot State poured it on in the second half.

Fisher added a fourth goal early in the second half. The Beavers added for three more goals in the second half, one each by Gemma Biasetto (Fr., F, Alburquerque, N.M.), Jamie Council (Sr., F, Atascadero, Calif.) and Kristin Long (Fr., Mid, Mesa, Ariz.) to get to the final.

Marie Torres (Sr., GK, San Bruno, Calif.) and Ashley Barzcewski (Sr., GK, O'Fallon, Mo.) both played well between the pipes for the Beavers. Torres made four saves, allowing just the one goal in 56 minutes of play. Barzcewski made one save with no goals allowed in 34 minutes.

With the win, the Beavers move to 1-0 on the young season and 3-0 all time in regular season openers. With the loss the MSUM drops to 0-1.

Minot State soccer will head a few miles south for their next game on Sept. 2, as they head to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary Maurauders in the school's first NSIC conference match.
