Beavers earns signature road win

Zoe Fisher's goal lifts MISU over Winona State

Box Score WINONA, Minn. – Minot State University's Zoe Fisher (So., CM, Cambridgeshire, England) got back to scoring goals and the Beavers got a signature road win.

Fisher netted her sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute to propel Minot State to a 1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win in women's soccer over Winona State Sunday at Verizon Wireless Stadium.

“This was pretty big for us,” said MISU head coach Jason Spain. “They (Winona) don't lose at home. We were very good in the midfield today and did a great job of upping the pressure in the second half. I think we proved we can go on a tough trip and win games and play with the best in this conference.”

The win gave Minot State (5-2-1 overall, 3-2 NSIC) a split of a pair of key Northern Sun games and sent the Warriors (5-3, 4-1) to its first NSIC defeat. The Beavers lost 1-0 to Upper Iowa on Saturday in one of the toughest road trips both due to opponents and distance traveled. Minot State entered the weekend as the No. 8 ranked team in the Central Region, while Winona State was tied for fifth and Upper Iowa was seventh.

“I have mixed feelings about this trip. It is by far the toughest trip we take and a split is good, but we came down to get six points and win both,” Spain said. “But we are pretty happy on the trip home.”

Fisher's game-winner came unassisted as she shot the ball from the right side into the corner of the net, beating Alexandra Vial. Fisher and Emilie Rebelo (So., F, Sacramento, Calif.) finished with two shots on goal for the Beavers.

“Emilie was big-time in the middle,” Spain said. “She has to be good for us or there is a crowd around Zoe. By the end of the game (Winona's) backs were way up because of Emilie and Zoe took advantage. We need Emilie to take the pressure off of Zoe and for Zoe to take the pressure off of Emilie and today Emilie was unbelievable.”

Minot State was outshot 14-12, but had an 8-7 advantage in the second half and ended up with a 9-8 lead in shots on goal and a huge 7-4 cushion in corner kicks.

“Something just felt different today,” said MISU head coach Jason Spain. “We usually try to get as much done before the game so we aren't doing those kind of things after and had a trip to Wal-Mart for supplies scheduled for this morning. I get on the bus and they are all in uniform and said they wanted to go right to the field.

“We were 4-2-1 coming into this game and that's not bad considering this is our first full year in the conference and in DII (NCAA Division II). But this group doesn't want to be just 'not-bad.' They want to win.”

Marie Torres (Sr., GK., San Bruno, Calif.) was her steady self, stopping all eight shots on goal for her fifth win of the season and her fourth shutout. Vial finished with eight saves as well for Winona.

The Beavers return to Herb Parker Stadium for a pair of NSIC games this weekend, taking on Concordia University, St. Paul Saturday and Minnesota State University-Mankato Sunday. Both games are a 1 p.m. start. Minnesota State is the region's top ranked team.
