Rebelo's give-and-go goal lifts Beavers

Minot State's Emilie Rebelo scores in 65th minute in 1-0 win

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's Emily Rebelo's (So., M, Sacramento, Calif.) tap-in off a give-and-go proved to be the match winner, lifting the Beavers to a 1-0 win over Northern State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Friday at Herb Parker Stadium.

Rebelo took a quick feed from Chloe Melton (Fr., F, Fleet, England) on the right side of the goal and left-footed it in for her third goal of the season in the 65th minute. She started a nifty give-and-go play with Melton, getting the ball back at point-blank range.

"I felt like we concentrated more today and we outshot them in both have so that's good," said MISU head coach Jason Spain. "We concentrated better on not giving up a goal."

The win gives Minot State (6-7-3 overall, 6-6-1 NSIC) a one-point cushion on both St. Cloud State and Augustana College for seventh place. Augustana College plays the University of Sioux Falls tonight (6 p.m. start) and all three teams are in action in the regular-season finale Sunday. The Beavers travel to Minnesota State-Moorhead for their final match, beginning at 1 p.m.

Minot State carried much of the play and put some good pressure on Northern State (8-8-1, 5-8-1) in the early part of the second half, but hadn't recorded a shot-on-goal until the Rebelo tally. Still, the Beavers led in both shots (14-6) and shots on goal (4-2).

While the offense heated up midway through the second half, the defense was steady all game, allowing just two shots to make it to goalkeeper Gemma Biasetto (So., Albuquerque, N.M.). Biasetto did her part with two saves for her second shutout of the year.

"We knew Northern had some good offensive players but out coaches came up with some good tactics and strategies that kept them marked the whole game," Biasetto said. "It worked well for us."

"We went with Gemma today because of the wind. I wanted to go with length and she did a good job for us," Spain said.

NSU's Brittany Tietz finished with three saves in the loss. Allie MacDonald had three shots and one shot on goal for the Wolves.

Minot State will need at least one point to secure a playoff spot and three points against MSU-M along with a loss and at least a tie for Augustana would secure a seventh-place finish heading into next week's NSIC Tournament.
