Beavers fall to top seed Minnesota State

Minot State fell 5-2 to No. 1 seed Minnesota State in the 2013 NSIC/U.S. Bank Tournament

Box Score FAIRBAULT, Minn. – Down three goals at the start of the second half, Minot State soccer could have very well given up hope on their hopes of repeating as NSIC/U.S. Bank Tournament Champions.

However, the Beavers rallied the troops and gave the No. 6 nationally ranked Mavericks a scare as they scored two goals less than four minutes apart. But it was the Mavericks (16-2-1 overall, 13-1-1 NSIC) who scored two more late goals to end MISU's (7-8-3 overall, 7-6-2 NSIC) season and advance with a 5-2 win.

Due to poor field conditions on at the field on campus of Minnesota State, the match was moved to Dane Family Field House on the campus of Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn.

"We were down one in the second half after giving up three," said Minot State head coach Jason Spain. "You can't ask for much more than that against this good of a team. We just gave up two at the end of each half and we can't allow that to happen. We just weren't deep enough."

Jazmine Whitlock (Sr., D, Santa Rosa, Calif.) scored her first career goal as she found the upper right-hand corner and got it past keeper Molly McGough.  Just 3 minutes, 28 seconds later Zoe Fisher (Jr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) beat McGough on a breakaway, again pushing it past her right side from 15 yards out.

Then just as quick as it came, momentum left the Beavers as Minnesota State's Rebecca Pederson answered with a goal just 47 seconds later, extending the MSU lead back to two goals. In the 81st minute the Mavericks added another goal off the foot of Tori Meinhardt to bring the score to the final of 5-2.

A trio of Mavericks scored in the first half including Korey Kronforst who added her Northern Sun leading 19th goal of the year. MSU tested goalkeeper Gemma Biasetto (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) early and often. The Mavericks had 15 shots in the first half, nine of them making it on goal and six were stopped by Biasetto.

In half number two, Spain decided to put in Jimi Guibor (So., GK, Manteca, Calif.). She saw 13 shots come her way in the second half, six of those were on goal. In total, Minnesota State outshot Minot State 28-12 while only four MISU shots made it on goal.

The loss marked the last collegiate game for five Minot State seniors including Taylor Carlstrom (D, Portland, Ore.) who will leave MISU's all-time leader in matches played (72) and minutes played (5,549).
