RANKINGS: Minot State, Northern State and MSU-Moorhead were not ranked in the latest NABC Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll.
RECENT HISTORY: The Beavers earned a key sweep last weekend in the MSU Dome regular-season finale, topping Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston. Northern State extended its losing streak to four games by falling twice on the road last weekend, falling 72-65 at Minnesota Duluth and 78-62 at St. Cloud State. MSU-Moorhead also fell twice on the road, losing 75-67 to St. Cloud and 74-66 at UMD to push its losing streak to three games.
OVERALL SERIES: Minot State fell earlier in the season to Northern State, the only matchup as DII members. MISU has not had much luck against MSU-M, trailing the series 17-9 overall and 0-2 as a member of the NCAA Division II.
NOTING THE WOLVES: Northern State University will play its final two regular season home games at the Aberdeen Civic Arena instead of Wachs Arena due to a prior commitment. The Wolves are averaging a league-best 3,003 fans and are 9-4 at Wachs Arena this season… NSU has played just two home games (both losses) at home since Jan. 19… Northern's leading scorer Collin Pryor played 39 minutes and scored a team-high 20 points in a 78-62 loss Saturday at St. Cloud State. Pryor is averaging 16.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, while logging 29.7 minutes… Senior Dustin Tetzlaff is just six points shy of 1,000 career points… NSU has four players averaging more than eight points per game and come into the weekend with a 69.9 per game scoring average… The Wolves are shooting 46.3 percent from the floor… NSU has struggled some from the free-throw line as they shoot just 67.6 percent as a team. If you take Pryors solid 115-130 shooting out, the remainder of the Wolves are hitting just 61 percent.
NOTING THE DRAGONS: Minnesota State-Moorhead raced out to a 13-1 record following a 79-64 win over Concordia-St. Paul Jan. 11. The Dragons are just 3-9 since that win… MSU-M has lost both of its overtime games this season, on back-to-back outings during its 3-9 run, losing 86-82 at home to Southwest Minnesota State and 76-75 at Bemidji State Jan. 19 and 25 respectively… Anthony Tucker and Alex Novak continue to be one of the top 1-2 punches in the Northern Sun as they combine for a 32.5 scoring average and a 14.3 rebounding average… Tucker leads the team with a 19.5 scoring average and is on the court for 36.2 of the 40 minutes per night… Novak and Eric Olson have combined for 73 blocked shots this season… The Dragons only average 10.5 turnovers per game, but are forcing just 8.9 for a minus-1.6 average… MSU-M has scored 161 more points than its opponents in the first half this season.
COMPANY AT THE TOP: For much of the season, Minot State junior guard
E.J. Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) has been the sole double-figure scorer for the Beavers. While Williams has maintained his average, hitting 11.5 points per game, senior
Josh Johnson (F, Lufkin, Texas) moved into the double-digit range after a solid weekend. Johnson pushed his season average to 10.1 per game after scoring 24 points in two games.
FINAL WEEKS OF A CRAZY RIDE: Minot State's three seniors
Josh Johnson,
Anthony Enriquez (G, Tacoma, Wash.) and
Kelvin Fraser (F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) will play their final regular season contests this weekend, completing a bumpy ride as the first NCAA Division II recruiting class. All three sat out one season as redshirts to finish up in the first year in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and have been in the program for three seasons and two head coaches. Johnson is second on the team this year in scoring and led the Beavers in 2011-12. Enriquez averaged 11.4 points per game as a junior two seasons ago and is fourth in scoring this year at 8.4 per game. Finally, Fraser, who is sidelined with an injury, will leave as the school's all-time shot block leader both in a season (80) and a career (115). He is averaging 6.3 points per game and has 35 blocks this year.
LOOKING FOR MORE ROAD-SIDE MAGIC: Minot State is looking to end a three-game road losing streak as they finish the final two games in conference play away from Minot – hoping to secure a home playoff berth. The Beavers have cooled off some since a hot early start on the road in which MISU picked up its biggest win of its short life as a NCAA Division II member, knocking off then No. 19 ranked St. Cloud State.
NO MISTAKE, KORF CAN HANDLE THE BALL: Sophomore forward
Thomas Korf (St. Cloud, Minn.) continues to be solid with the basketball as he has gone five straight games without a turnover and has just eight turnovers on the season. Korf has played the second-most minutes for the Beavers behind guard
Dominique McDonald (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.), but is second best on the Beavers team to sophomore
Matt Yale (G, Berthold, N.D.), who only has four turnovers. Korf, however, has nine more games played and has logged just over 500 more minutes than Yale. There is no other player in the NSIC that has at least 600 minutes played and has less than 10 miscues a game and only two have less than 20 – Tyler Vaughan or MSU Moorhead and Damarius Cruz of St. Cloud State. Korf averages one turnover every 75.5 minutes played.
SHOOTING FOR BETTER NUMBERS: Minot State has steadily increased its shooting percentage this season and because of that, the Beavers' per-game scoring average has also gone up. The Beavers best night of the year came in Friday's win over Bemidji State as the Beavers scored 86 points – fourth best on the season – and shot 56 percent from the floor – best of the year. Minot State hit 9 of 14 3-pointers and was 21 of 26 from the free-throw line.
