RECORDS: Minot State comes into its Homecoming 2013 weekend with a 1-2-2 record overall and a 1-1-1 record in the Northern Sun. MISU is 0-0-1 at home as this is just the second time the Beavers have played at Herb Parker Stadium. Winona State is 2-2-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa is 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NSIC play.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State's head coach is
Jason Spain. Spain is in his fourth season with the Beavers and he sports a record 37-21-7. Last season, he led MISU to a NSIC Tournament Championship as well as an NCAA Division II National Tournament berth. WSU's Ali Omar has one of the longest coaching runs in the NSIC as he is in his 18th season at Winona State. He has a lofty record 259-86-7 overall. Brian Diaz is the head coach at Upper Iowa and is 4-2-0 in his first season.
RANKINGS: Minot State, Winona State and Upper Iowa did not receive any votes in the Sept. 24 National Soccer Coaches' Association of American Poll.
RECENT HISTORY: The Beavers split a pair of NSIC games on the road last week, losing a lopsided 4-0 margin on Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State. MISU rebounded with its first win of the season, a 2-1 triumph at the University of Sioux Falls. The Warriors split as well, winning 2-1 in overtime at St. Cloud State and losing 2-1 at Minnesota Duluth. The Peacocks lost for the first time in conference play, dropping a 2-0 decision to UMD, but routed St. Cloud State 5-1.
THE SERIES: The Beavers hold a 2-0 lead all-time over Winona State, topping the Warriors both times last season. IUI won the only meeting between the two schools on the pitch, winning last season.
NOTING THE WARRIORS: Winona State has taken 11 more corners than anyone else in the conference, coming into the weekend with 44 corners on the season… The Warriors are allowing just .83 goals against this season, allowing just five goals so far this season… WSU had scored five goals on the season, all by different players. Kati Baker, Rebecca McCoy, Alaina Kne, Caitlin Lilly and Taylor Zehren all have a goal on the year. Baker leads the team with 15 shots total… Alexandra Vial has played every minute in goal for the Warriors, sporting a .73 goals against average.
NOTING THE PEACOCKS: In Upper Iowa's 5-1 win on Sunday against St. Cloud State, sophomore Madie Edwards finished with five points as she scored twice and added an assist… UIU leads the conference in both shots taken with 123 and fouls, committing 63 over six matches… The five goals was the most scored by UIU this season… Upper Iowa has outscored opponents 8-4 in the second half and have taken 29 more shots… Aimee Wronski has six goals and an assist already this season, leading the conference in shots and goals.
HEAD-ING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Minot State got its first lead of the season off the head of sophomore
Kayla Schlittenhart (M, Sparks, Nev.) as she redirected a corner for a 1-0 lead in the second half against the University of Sioux Falls Sunday. The Beavers had gone nine halves of soccer without a lead until the goal. The Beavers also earned their first win of the 2013 campaign with the 2-1 win. Minot State is still looking for its first first-half goal in 2013.
ALL ENGLAND CLUB: Freshman
Chloe Melton (F, Fleet, England) has scored two of the three Minot State goals this season and is following in the footsteps of fellow English forward
Zoe Fisher (Jr., M, Cambridgeshire, England) as the Beavers leading scorer. Fisher, who has an assist in 2013, is the school's all-time leading goal scorer.
HOME COOKING: Minot State is 19-5-3 on the FieldTurf at Herb Parker Stadium all time. The Beavers haven't lost at home since a 2-0 defeat on Sept. 30, 2012 against nationally ranked Minnesota State. MISU was 8-1-2 last season at The Herb and 5-1 in their inaugural season in 2010.
LEND A HELPING FOOT:
Emilie Rebelo (So., F, Sacramento, Calif.) leads the Beavers with two assists out of a total of three goals scored on the year. Rebelo had two assists – to go along with three goals – all of last year.
BE AGGRESSIVE, B-E AGGRESSIVE: With its attacking style, Minot State finished the 2012 season with 197 fouls on the season, averaging 9.3 per contest. The Beavers had 101 fouls, compared to just 87 for its opponents, in the first half, finishing with a plus-38 in fouls. This season, however, the Beavers are just plus-9 through five matches and are averaging just 8.4 per game.
BY THE NUMBERS
2: Overtime games the Beavers have played in five games to start the season. Minot State has two overtime ties, including a 0-0 overtime tie with the University of Mary to open the season. The scoreless tie with U-Mary marked the fourth time in school history the Beavers have played to a 0-0 tie.
