Second-half lull thwarts MISU upset bid

Beavers push No. 21 Winona State, can't complete upset bid

Box Score WINONA, Minn. – Minot State University gave No. 21 ranked Winona State fits for about 30 minutes Saturday night.

For about five minutes of the second half, however, the Warriors showed why they are so highly ranked.

The Warriors (15-2 overall,10-0 NSIC) outscored the Beavers 17-2 after the Beavers tied the game at 44 just before the under-10 minute media timeout to run away from MISU 78-64 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball at McGown Gymnasium.

"We missed a few and they made a few and there was a momentum change – like there is in every game – but we didn't respond from that," said MISU head coach Matt Murken. "We've been too spurty and that isn't going to get the job done. We certainly did some things well tonight just not enough."

The Beavers (6-8 overall, 2-8 NSIC) tied the game on a layup by Samuel Johnson (Sr., F, Las Vegas, Nev.) with 14:02 remaining in the game.

But the Warriors scored nine straight keyed by a 3-pointer by Taylor Cameron to start the run. After a Dominique McDonald (So., G, Raleigh, N.C.) jumper stopped the first run, WSU pushed on for the next eight in the game.

Minot State never got the lead under double figures the rest of the way.

"Against a ranked team, you can go from up four to down four pretty darn quick," Murken said. They made us pay in two stretches."

A comeback wasn't out of the realm for the Beavers, however, as they erased a similar lead in the first half, mainly behind long range shooting by Thomas Korf (Jr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.), who hit four of his five 3-ponters to take a 16-12 lead after trailing 12-4 early.

"I felt like we came out executed our game plan for the first 25 minutes or so," Murken said. "We were protecting the lane even early where they just made their shots, but we did a pretty good job early on."

Winona countered Korf's 3s with 12 as a team as Conrad Masberg hit four on his way to a team-high 17 points to pace the Warriors. Kellen Taylor reached a double-double with 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points in the win.

Korf paced MISU with 17 points and added two rebounds. McDonald scored 10 points and dished out five assists, while Chris East (Sr., F, Toronto, Ontario) had a team-high 12 rebounds and eight points in the loss.

The Beavers return home Friday for the first of four straight at the MSU Dome, starting with Minnesota Duluth on Alumni, Beaver Boosters and Fan Appreciation Night.
