Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University and the University of Mary are becoming quite familiar with physical, grind it out 0-0 overtime draws. The Beavers not only played to a nil-nil draw Monday night, but both teams found themselves scoreless after 110 minutes one year ago when the Beavers opened their season against the Marauders.
Goalkeeper
Gemma Biasetto (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) delivered an outstanding performance for the Beavers tallying six saves and earning her second shutout of the season. The junior made a difficult diving save late in regulation to keep things level in the match.
"We have a new keeper coach (
Tyler Schochenmaier) and he has stressed fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals," Biasetto said. "That's what I tried to do, just work on fundamentals. He has helped me just being confident in myself and then my defense was great in front of me."
Head coach
Jason Spain spoke very highly of his goalkeeper's performance.
"She was All-American tonight to me, I'm proud of her," Spain said. "It was her second straight clean sheet against U-Mary."
Despite a somewhat shaky first 25 minutes that included four corner kicks for the Marauders, the Beavers weathered the storm and made it to halftime with the game still in the balance. The second half proved to be a different story.
"They generated corner after corner, which was frustrating," Spain said. "After the start, I thought we carried a lot of the play in the second half and the first overtime was mostly us. Our fitness level was good again."
The Beavers came out rejuvenated from the tweet of the referee's whistle in the second half and ended the half with a 7-5 edge in shots.
Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and
Chloe Melton (So., F, Fleet, England) both had quality chances to deliver a game-winning goal but were denied by the crossbar.
"Mary was good," Biasetto said. "We played our hardest, considering we played four games in how many games, and we realized that we can hold our own against the big teams. Tonight was a big confidence boost."
The match moves both Minot State and U-Mary to 0-0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The teams also hold the same overall record at 1-1-2 heading into their second NSIC contests later this week.
The Beavers host two home games this weekend starting with a 1 p.m. match against Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday, Sept. 20. The following day, Bemidji State comes to town for another 1 p.m. contest.
